Martin Truex Jr.’s Daytona 500 Comeback: Can He Finally Secure the Elusive Crown?

Martin Truex Jr. is proving that retirement from full-time NASCAR doesn’t mean stepping away from the sport entirely. After hanging up his helmet as a full-time Cup Series driver at the end of the 2024 season, the 43-year-old veteran isn’t ready to leave the racetrack just yet. In a surprising turn, Truex announced his intention to run a partial schedule in 2025, with his eyes set firmly on the one trophy that has always eluded him—the Daytona 500.

The Daytona Dream That Never Came True

Truex Jr.’s storied NASCAR career includes 31 Cup Series wins, a 2017 championship, and countless memorable moments, but the coveted Daytona 500 remains a glaring omission from his résumé. Since making his Cup Series debut in 2006, the “Great American Race” has been a source of heartbreak for the veteran. Despite coming agonizingly close on several occasions—most notably his 0.01-second loss to Denny Hamlin in 2016, the closest finish in Daytona 500 history—victory has always slipped through his fingers.

A New Chapter, a Familiar Mission

For 2025, Truex is determined to cross this career-defining milestone off his list. But questions loom: Who will provide the ride for his Daytona 500 quest?

Denny Hamlin, co-owner of 23XI Racing and a long-time teammate of Truex at Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), offered Truex a spot with his team. However, Truex wasn’t entirely convinced by the proposal. When asked about his plans, he responded, “No, it’s not [with 23XI Racing]. I’m not sure, honestly. I was told [Joe Gibbs Racing] is doing it somehow, so we’ll see.”

Now, fresh details suggest another potential suitor for his Daytona bid: MBM Motorsports, an open-entry team led by owner Carl Long.

MBM Motorsports’ Bold Daytona Plans

MBM Motorsports, known for fielding non-chartered entries at marquee events like Daytona, has hinted at Truex being part of their plans for the 2025 Daytona 500. Team owner Carl Long shared on Facebook that his team is preparing a 20-race Cup schedule, starting at Bowman Gray Stadium and including the Daytona 500. However, he noted that the driver for the Daytona entry remains undecided.

Long’s post revealed that his team is exploring multiple potential drivers, including Truex and former IndyCar legend Helio Castroneves, for the limited open slots on the grid. Truex’s name being floated alongside Castroneves—himself a Daytona aspirant—adds intrigue to the speculation.

The Stakes of the Great American Race

The Daytona 500 is NASCAR’s most prestigious race, known for its unique qualifying format and fierce competition. Non-chartered teams like MBM face a monumental challenge to even secure a spot on the grid, as they must compete against other open entries for limited starting positions during the Duels.

For Truex, racing as an open entry adds to the pressure. Yet, his desire to tackle Daytona once more reflects his undying competitive spirit. Whether his bid comes via Joe Gibbs Racing, 23XI Racing, or a bold venture with an open team like MBM, Truex will have one last chance to rewrite his Daytona story.

Pipe Dream or Perfect Ending?

As fans await the final word on Truex’s 2025 Daytona ride, the question lingers: Can the veteran finally conquer the Great American Race, or will this be another chapter of unfulfilled promise?

Truex’s history with Daytona and his determination to succeed suggest he isn’t just chasing a pipe dream. With decades of experience, a championship pedigree, and a deep understanding of restrictor-plate racing, Truex has all the tools to make it happen. But as history has shown, winning at Daytona often takes more than skill—it requires a perfect blend of strategy, teamwork, and luck.

For Martin Truex Jr., the 2025 Daytona 500 could be the race that defines his legacy. Whether it’s with JGR, 23XI, or an underdog team like MBM, one thing is certain: the NASCAR world will be watching, hoping for a storybook ending.
