After retiring from full-time racing in 2024, Martin Truex Jr., one of NASCAR’s most respected drivers, has announced his plans for a part-time return to tackle the Daytona 500 in 2025. Despite a legendary career, Truex has yet to conquer the iconic event, and this one-off entry offers the 2017 Cup Series champion another shot at glory.

Not Teaming with 23XI Racing

Initial reports suggested Truex might collaborate with 23XI Racing, but during the NASCAR season awards, Truex clarified that this would not be the case. Instead, he revealed that his former team, Joe Gibbs Racing (JGR), is working behind the scenes to field his car.

“No, it’s not [with 23XI]. I’m not sure what they’re doing, honestly. It’s up in the air. I was told JGR’s doing it somehow, so we’ll see,” Truex told reporters.

This revelation distances Truex from the ongoing chaos surrounding 23XI Racing, which is embroiled in a lawsuit with NASCAR over its charters for the 2025 season. With the potential of 23XI running as an open team next year, Truex’s team has seemingly opted for the stability and resources of JGR.

JGR’s Next Chapter: Chase Briscoe Steps into the No. 19

As JGR prepares for its future without Truex, the team has enlisted Chase Briscoe to take over the No. 19 car in 2025. Briscoe, a former Xfinity Series champion, brings a fresh perspective and is expected to start winning races early in his tenure.

The team’s No. 19 crew chief expressed confidence in Briscoe’s potential and work ethic:

“We’re going to push him hard. It’s great to have someone based in North Carolina who comes to the shop multiple times a week. We can actually build a team around him.”

Briscoe faces immense pressure to fill the shoes of a NASCAR legend, but his commitment to team development could be key to success.

Truex’s Final Shot at Daytona Glory

Truex’s return for the Daytona 500 is highly anticipated, given his storied career and enduring competitive spirit. While the full details of his entry remain under wraps, JGR’s involvement assures that the 43-year-old will have a competitive car for the event. This marks a pivotal opportunity for Truex to add the elusive Daytona 500 trophy to his already illustrious career.

With the Daytona 500 shaping up to be one of the most thrilling openers in recent years, fans can look forward to seeing Truex back in action on NASCAR’s biggest stage.
