MARKO: Perez’s accident will result in a loss of €2 to €3 million for Red Bull.

MARKO: Acidente de Perez resultará em perda de €2 a €3 milhões para Red Bull.

It was a significant event, avoidable if not for the simultaneous misjudgment of two experienced Formula 1 drivers. Starting from a position near the back of the grid in the Red Bull RB20 (!!!), Perez recklessly pushed Magnussen’s Haas into the barrier, while the Danish driver stubbornly continued to accelerate, trying to pass through a narrowing gap.

The consequences of the momentary lapses of both drivers were captured on television for all to see. Hulkenberg also had the misfortune of getting involved in the incident, with no way to avoid the wreckage caused by his competitors just half a kilometer from the starting line.

In his summary of the Monaco Grand Prix for Speedweek, Marko predicted the financial impact of the damage to RB20 #11: “Sergio Pérez had a costly accident on the first lap. It cost us between two and three million euros. This is a significant disadvantage due to budget restrictions. Damages like these directly affect our development budget.

“We are also uncertain about the condition of the gearbox and engine, which could result in additional penalties if we exceed the allowed quota.”

Regarding the incident itself, Marko acknowledged: “Pérez was on the racing line, and Magnussen took an optimistic approach. However, we must accept that the risk of accidents like this exists and we must bear the financial burden.”

After a lackluster Monaco Grand Prix, where only one overtake occurred, and that was for positions at the back of the pack, all top ten drivers maintained their starting positions throughout the 78 laps of the race.

Before the Grand Monaco Parade, the 2024 Monaco Grand Prix began with an exciting first part, full of intense action and drama. This was the moment when Perez and Magnussen, along with Alpine’s Esteban Ocon, made costly mistakes. Ocon thoughtlessly collided with his teammate Pierre Gasly as they entered the tunnel, resulting in an incident that ended the race for Ocon. Surprisingly, Gasly managed to escape unscathed and maintained his 10th position throughout the race, securing the last point of the day. It was a regrettable series of events for the Alpine F1 team.

Regarding the Ocon-Gasly incident, Marko shared his perspective, drawing parallels with similar situations in the past. He recalled cases at Red Bull Racing where teammates, such as Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen in Baku in 2018, and Mark Webber and Sebastian Vettel in Turkey in 2010, collided with each other. In both cases, the drivers were called by the team and openly discussed the issue. It became clear to them that such collisions with teammates were unacceptable. Ricciardo eventually left the team, and there were no more incidents involving Webber. They recognized that such behavior was not tolerable.

Although many blamed Ocon for the incident, Marko remained cautious. He acknowledged the difficulty of taking action in such cases, as clear intent would have to be proven, which was not the case here. The driver’s claim of misjudging the situation eliminates the element of intent. However, Marko pointed out that the recurring nature of such incidents within Alpine makes the situation even more challenging to address.
