MARK MAY SLAMS COMMANDERS OVER DAN QUINN HIRE

The Washington Commanders have made a significant coaching change by hiring former Dallas Cowboys defensive coordinator Dan Quinn as their new head coach. This move concludes the coaching carousel of this offseason, although notable names such as Bill Belichick, Mike Vrabel, and Pete Carroll are still available.

While some have praised the Commanders for bringing in an experienced leader who has previous head coaching experience, former Washington and two-time Super Bowl-winning offensive lineman Mark May has expressed his dissatisfaction with the hire. May criticized the team for not being more proactive in their search, stating, “They sat on their hands, and look what they ended up with: The bottom of the heap.”

Quinn’s hiring has sparked controversy, but it is important to note that he was considered a head coaching candidate in 2022 and was even a finalist for other positions this offseason. Additionally, it is worth mentioning that there were other successful options available, including Belichick, Vrabel, and Carroll, who all have defensive backgrounds.

Another factor to consider is that the Commanders may have initially focused on younger candidates like Detroit Lions offensive coordinator Ben Johnson and Houston Texans offensive coordinator Bobby Slowik. However, both Johnson and Slowik ultimately withdrew their names from consideration and decided to remain with their respective teams. This left Washington with limited options and ultimately led to the hiring of Quinn.

Despite the criticism, Quinn does bring a wealth of experience to the Commanders. He previously served as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons for six seasons, from 2015 to 2020, and even led the team to a Super Bowl appearance in 2016. Additionally, he will have the opportunity to work with the No. 2 overall pick in the upcoming draft, as well as three talented quarterbacks who are expected to be top prospects.

Overall, the Commanders’ decision to hire Dan Quinn as their new head coach has garnered mixed reactions. While some question the team’s approach and believe there were better options available, others recognize Quinn’s experience and the potential he brings to the organization. Only time will tell if this coaching change will prove to be successful for the Washington Commanders.
