Mark Hughes: Brecha da Mercedes em Suzuka disfarçada.

In the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, Lewis Hamilton’s performance in Formula 1 qualifying was impressive. For the first time this season, he outperformed his teammate George Russell. Hamilton’s third fastest time in Q2 indicated that his Mercedes had the potential to challenge Red Bull, as he was only 0.147s behind Max Verstappen. However, his excitement quickly turned to confusion when he found out about the half-second gap to Red Bull in Q3. Hamilton questioned where he had lost so much time.

Upon reflection, Hamilton realized that his position in Q2 was somewhat deceiving. He benefited from using his new tires later than the other leaders, which gave him better grip on the track. Despite starting in seventh on the grid, Hamilton believed his car had more potential than his position suggested. He could have easily secured a fourth place in the highly competitive part of the grid. Hamilton remained optimistic about his performance and acknowledged that being half a second behind Red Bull was expected.

Although Hamilton’s lap was a quarter of a second faster than Russell’s, it could have been competitive with Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari for fourth place. However, Hamilton pushed the tires too hard in the early part of the lap, causing oversteer and compromising his overall performance. He felt he had extracted the maximum performance from the car, but recognized the need for additional improvements.

The demanding Suzuka circuit wore out Hamilton’s tires. From the hairpin, he was losing time to Red Bull every time he accelerated after a corner due to the overheating of the rear tires. This was evident in the GPS overlay data. Red Bull also faced similar tire issues, but Hamilton’s tires gave in earlier, resulting in a significant time difference.

Tire preparation is crucial in Suzuka, and many drivers emphasized the challenge of managing tire energy. Sergio Perez, who qualified on the front row alongside Verstappen, explained that pushing too hard could easily cost a driver a tenth of a second in a corner. Lando Norris, who qualified in third place for McLaren, agreed that exceeding the limit in the first part of the sector could result in a time penalty. Despite these challenges, Hamilton demonstrated impressive skills in sector one, reducing the time difference to Verstappen.

Hamilton’s tire difficulties became more evident after the hairpin, as he continued to lose time to Red Bull. By the end of the lap, he was almost half a second behind Verstappen. The significant time difference resulted from a combination of oversteer in turn 1 and subsequent tire degradation. Hamilton acknowledged that the half-second deficit was a result of these factors.

Although Hamilton’s performance in qualifying may seem disappointing, he remained surprisingly positive. He acknowledged that this weekend was smoother for him, with no major setup changes or issues with the car. He felt comfortable and confident in the car, especially in sector one, where Mercedes struggled last year. Hamilton believed the team had made progress and now had a good foundation to work from. However, he recognized that closing the gap to Red Bull would take time and further improvements.

Mercedes’ analysis indicated that the car’s performance in qualifying was in line with expectations at the start of the season. They had a solid base to build on in terms of aerodynamic load. However, they also discovered the car’s sensitivity to setup and the tendency of the rear axle to overload without proper adjustments. The team now has a better understanding of the car’s limitations and aims to avoid straying from the ideal setup range. The cooler track temperatures in Abu Dhabi presented a new challenge, but the team believes they have a better understanding of the car’s behavior.

The next race will provide more insights and opportunities for improvement.
