Two-time DTM champion Marco Wittmann has ignited a firestorm of controversy with his aggressive racing tactics at Zandvoort, leading to a post-race penalty that barely affected his podium finish.
During race two of the DTM weekend, Wittmann found himself in a heated battle with teammate Rene Rast, ultimately crossing the line just 0.005s ahead of Thomas Preining after a five-second penalty was imposed for an incident involving Jack Aitken’s Ferrari at Turn 1.
Defending his actions, Wittmann claimed he “tried to give” Aitken space during the overtake but maintained his position, securing a second-place finish despite the penalty. The Schubert BMW driver expressed satisfaction with his performance, especially after a challenging sixth-place finish in the opening race of the weekend.
Despite the penalty, Wittmann’s competitive spirit shone through as he attempted to challenge Rast for the lead in the closing stages of the race. The intense battle between the two drivers showcased the high level of skill and precision required in DTM racing, with Wittmann acknowledging the difficulty of forcing an error from his formidable opponent.
Looking ahead, Wittmann remains optimistic about his championship prospects, currently sitting sixth in the standings, 21 points behind leader Lucas Auer. With the Norisring race looming on the horizon, Wittmann is poised to continue his pursuit of DTM glory in the fiercely competitive series.
