Marco Andretti to chase 20th Indianapolis 500 entry with Andretti Global: A family legacy continues

Marco Andretti is set to make his 20th attempt at the iconic Indianapolis 500, joining Andretti Global’s formidable lineup for the 2025 race. The son of Michael Andretti and grandson of 1969 Indy 500 winner Mario Andretti will drive the No. 98 Honda in what promises to be a landmark year for the event, featuring hybrid powertrains for the first time in NTT IndyCar Series history.

A veteran’s return to the Brickyard

Andretti, known for his deep experience at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, will race alongside Andretti Global’s full-season regulars: Colton Herta, Kyle Kirkwood, and Marcus Ericsson. With three third-place finishes at the Indy 500 and a 2020 pole position to his name, Andretti’s return offers the team an edge in data collection and race strategy.

Rob Edwards, COO of Andretti Global, emphasized the value of having Marco back in the mix:

“He has a lot of experience at Indianapolis, and I think we all see benefits in running an extra car in Indy. The extra data, information, and opportunities to try things will help us work together to get the result we want.”

A legacy of excellence

Andretti Global’s Indy 500 squad boasts a wealth of talent and achievements. Marcus Ericsson, who won the 2022 Indy 500 with Chip Ganassi Racing, brings a winning pedigree to the team, while Marco Andretti’s own history at the Brickyard solidifies the family’s enduring legacy at the event.

“The continuity with Marco, as opposed to introducing someone new in that fourth car, has a lot of benefits,” Edwards added. “With his experience and ability to collaborate with the regular three drivers, we’re optimistic about our chances.”

The inclusion of hybrid powertrains in the 2025 Indy 500 marks a new chapter for the sport, blending traditional raw speed with cutting-edge technology. Andretti’s seasoned approach could prove invaluable in adapting to these changes.

Eyes on the prize

Marco Andretti’s quest for Indy 500 glory continues to captivate fans, who remember his near misses and dramatic moments over the years. Despite not yet securing a victory, his passion and determination remain unwavering, as does the Andretti family’s iconic presence at the Brickyard.

With a potent team lineup and the introduction of hybrid technology, the 2025 Indianapolis 500 could finally be the race that sees Marco Andretti join his grandfather Mario in achieving racing immortality.
