Formula 1 tests for 2024 have come to an end, and the three days of training provided valuable information for the upcoming season. Ferrari emerged as the fastest team in the tests, with Carlos Sainz leading Charles Leclerc in the overall times. Although it is premature to expect a repeat of this result in the Bahrain Grand Prix, Ferrari’s SF-24 appears to be the closest competitor to Red Bull. A closer analysis suggests that the pace difference between Ferrari and Red Bull is about three to four tenths of a second. The improved performance of Ferrari’s drivers in the new car represents a significant turnaround from last year when they found the previous car difficult to control. Ferrari’s technical director, Enrico Cardile, describes the new car as “easier to drive and predictable.” This stability improvement should also translate into better race pace and tire management. Red Bull’s standout pace in the tests was misleading, and there is a belief in the paddock that there is a greater performance difference compared to last year. Mercedes had a positive testing session, with Lewis Hamilton and George Russell expressing confidence in the performance and drivability of the car. The team finally has a car that can be consistent and respond to development, which has been lacking in previous years. McLaren faced some issues during the tests, including a problem with the fuel tank and a clutch problem. As a result, their tests were not as productive as expected, and they are not seen as an immediate threat to the top teams. Aston Martin had a relatively smooth test, with no major issues or standout performances. They are expected to be competitive but may not be at the forefront of the pack. There were interruptions during the tests due to a loose drain cover on the track, which caused adjustments to the teams’ and media’s schedule. A more permanent solution is needed before the next race. Alpine had a solid testing session, meeting expectations and showing improvement compared to last year. However, they are still considered in the midfield and have work to do to achieve a higher level of performance. Haas had a challenging test focused on long races and tire management. They have made progress from the issues of 2023 but still have uncertainties regarding their qualifying pace. Overall, there is no team in crisis, and the difference between the teams is small, making the first race of the season highly competitive.
