M-Sport’s Mārtiņš Sesks faces crucial race craft challenge: can he rise to the occasion?

M-Sport’s Rising Star Mārtiņš Sesks: A Diamond in the Rough Needs Polishing!

In the high-octane world of the World Rally Championship, speed is king, and Mārtiņš Sesks has it in spades! The talented driver has already made waves with his blistering pace, recently clinching M-Sport's first stage win of the season at Rally Sweden. But despite his undeniable talent, there are glaring areas for improvement, particularly in his race craft, according to M-Sport team principal Richard Millener.

At the rally in Umeå, a significant misstep in tire pressure management saw Sesks facing a nightmare scenario: three punctures in just two stages and only one spare tire at his disposal! Such a dire situation could have spelled disaster, especially with WRC regulations mandating that all four wheels must remain freely rotating on liaison sections. Miraculously, Sesks managed to navigate back to service but was sidelined for the afternoon loop due to using a tire-preserving method that is, unfortunately, not permitted.

While his raw speed dazzles fans and critics alike, it’s clear that Mārtiņš Sesks is still on a journey toward perfection. Millener didn't hold back when discussing the young driver’s mental resilience. “There’s no doubt he has the speed, but I think there’s a bit of work we can still do on race craft and learning that you just don’t give up,” he stated emphatically. The team principal pointed out that after experiencing his first puncture, Sesks appeared to lose focus, which could have cost him a potential podium finish.

The stakes are high in the intense world of rally racing, where every second counts and every decision can make or break a rally. Millener reminded everyone of a crucial lesson: “After the puncture, we saw Taka [Katsuta] roll. You just don’t know what can happen. Maybe you could have ended up on the podium. Maybe you wouldn’t have gotten that second puncture if you hadn’t relaxed your concentration.”

To ensure that Sesks can fully harness his potential, M-Sport is committed to providing him with ample seat time and experience. Millener explained, “It’s time in the car, it’s number of events. That’s why we push so hard to try and do, at minimum, the same as what we did last year.” However, with budget constraints looming large, the team must strategically select events that maximize Sesks’ learning and growth.

The road ahead is challenging, especially as the young driver prepares for more technical rallies. Millener noted, “He knew his pacenotes were nowhere near as good as they needed to be for technical stuff. The fast stuff there is no issue, but as soon as we get into the more technical rallies, he was struggling last year.” To elevate Sesks’ performance, the team must fine-tune the finer details of his racing strategy.

As Mārtiņš Sesks gears up to make his return to the WRC at Rally Portugal from May 7-10, he will be skipping the upcoming events in Kenya, Croatia, and Gran Canaria. The pressure is on for this rising star to refine his skills and enhance his race craft. The world is watching, and it’s clear that with the right focus and training, M-Sport’s prodigious talent could soon be vying for podium finishes and rally glory!

In the cutthroat arena of rally racing, perfection is not just desired; it’s demanded. And for Mārtiņš Sesks, the time to step up is now!
