Luca di Montezemolo Appointed McLaren Director, Vows Loyalty to Ferrari in Dramatic Move

Former Ferrari Chairman Makes Shock Move to McLaren Group Holdings Limited

In a jaw-dropping twist, Luca di Montezemolo, the former chairman of Ferrari, has transitioned to a new role as a director of McLaren Group Holdings Limited. This unexpected move marks a significant shift for the 77-year-old, who parted ways with Ferrari in 2014 after a remarkable tenure overseeing the team’s golden era with Formula 1 legend Michael Schumacher.

Despite his deep-rooted ties to Ferrari, di Montezemolo’s recent appointment to McLaren Group Holdings Limited signals a strategic decision to join forces with the entity controlling McLaren Automotive’s road car business and holding a minority stake in the manufacturer’s F1 team. Clarifying his position, di Montezemolo emphasized that his involvement would be solely within the realm of the road car division, affirming his unwavering allegiance to Ferrari by stating, “My heart is and will always remain red.”

While McLaren has been basking in recent F1 success, culminating in a long-awaited Constructors’ Championship win in 2024 and a dominant lead in the current season’s standings, the team navigated through financial turmoil, including a brush with bankruptcy during the global pandemic. Notably, McLaren Racing underwent restructuring with MSP Sports Capital acquiring a significant portion of the business in 2022, setting the stage for a resurgence in both performance and stability.

CEO Zak Brown lauded McLaren Racing’s growth trajectory following recent ownership developments, expressing optimism for the team’s future prospects. As McLaren continues to solidify its position at the forefront of F1 competition, rival Ferrari grapples with a championship drought since 2008, fueling speculation around potential leadership changes within the Scuderia.

Di Montezemolo’s critical stance on Ferrari’s current leadership echoes sentiments of a team in flux, as rumors swirl about the possible replacement of team principal Fred Vasseur. Amidst the uncertainty, names like Antonello Coletta and even Christian Horner have surfaced as contenders for pivotal roles within Ferrari, underscoring the intense competition and strategic maneuvering in the high-stakes world of Formula 1.

With di Montezemolo’s surprising leap to McLaren, the landscape of F1’s power dynamics sees a seasoned figure embarking on a new chapter, leaving fans and insiders alike on the edge of their seats as the rivalry between Ferrari and McLaren takes an unexpected turn.
