Lotus Teases Electrifying New Era with “Theory 1” Sports Car Concept

Lotus is continuing its bold transition into the electric era, offering fans a glimpse of what its next chapter in sports car innovation might look like. The iconic British automaker recently released two tantalizing teaser videos on Instagram showcasing the “Theory 1” concept, set to make its full debut on September 17. This new concept car appears to signal Lotus’s vision for future electric sports cars, potentially previewing a production model that could hit the streets by 2027.

As Lotus pivots away from internal combustion engines—culminating in the Emira, the brand’s last gas-powered model—the company is now focused on a fully electric lineup. The teaser for Theory 1 shows a sleek rear design with slim taillights flanking a “LOTUS” wordmark and a dramatic Kammback-style rear end complemented by an aggressive spoiler. It’s a striking silhouette that sets it apart from the brand’s current electric offerings, the Emeya SUV and the Eletre sedan, hinting that Theory 1 will embody a purer sports car aesthetic.

Though it is labeled as a concept, the Theory 1 may serve as a precursor to Lotus’s highly anticipated electric coupe, codenamed Type 135. Originally set for a 2027 release, this next-gen EV sports car may face delays due to challenges with battery technology. Speculation suggests the production version could rival Porsche’s upcoming electric Boxster/Cayman, with rumors of powertrain options ranging from 469 horsepower in its base form to an exhilarating 872 horsepower in a dual-motor variant. The projected price for this EV could start under $100,000, offering an electrified replacement for the beloved Elise and Emira models.

Theory 1 could be a game-changing concept, built on Lotus’s Lightweight Electric Vehicle Architecture (LEVA) platform, as the company seeks to stay true to its roots while embracing electrification. By using terms like “analog” and “natural” in its teasers, Lotus hints at blending cutting-edge electric performance with a focus on driving purity—a nod to the brand’s heritage.

While the full picture of Theory 1 is still to come, Lotus’s move towards electrification promises an exciting new chapter in performance car design, potentially setting new benchmarks for electric sports cars. All eyes are now on the debut next week to see if this concept will eventually make the leap from theory to reality.
