Logan Sargeant’s tenure with Williams appears to be nearing an abrupt end after a disastrous crash during FP3 at the Dutch Grand Prix, with reports suggesting that the team may replace him as soon as the Italian Grand Prix next week. The 23-year-old American driver’s crash at Turn 4, which occurred in damp conditions after he clipped the grass at the exit of Turn 3, caused significant damage to his FW46, even resulting in a brief fire.
While Sargeant emerged unscathed, the crash adds to a growing list of incidents in what has been a challenging season for the rookie. With Williams having already confirmed the signing of Carlos Sainz for the 2025 season, it’s been clear that Sargeant’s future with the team was uncertain. However, the latest reports indicate that his departure may come much sooner than anticipated.
Sources, including AMus and Total-Motorsport.com, suggest that Williams team principal James Vowles, who was reportedly unimpressed with the crash, may have run out of patience. The crash not only compromised Sargeant’s race weekend but also forced him to miss qualifying as the team couldn’t repair the car in time.
As speculation intensifies, several names have emerged as potential replacements for Sargeant. Mick Schumacher, currently the reserve driver for Mercedes—Williams’ engine supplier—is a leading candidate. Schumacher’s experience, coupled with his current role, makes him a logical choice if Williams decides to make a change.
Another option is Red Bull’s Liam Lawson, though Helmut Marko has hinted that Red Bull has its own plans for the New Zealander. This leaves Williams with a choice of several rookies, including Franco Colapinto, Gabriel Bortoleto, and Felipe Drugovich. However, it remains to be seen if the team would risk bringing in such an inexperienced driver at this critical stage of the season.
Sargeant’s struggle to deliver consistent performances, combined with this latest setback, has put his future in serious doubt. With the Italian Grand Prix just around the corner, Williams may be forced to make a swift decision as they evaluate their options for the remainder of the season.
