Logan Sargeant secures game-changing Ford WEC drive as Red Bull Powertrains revolutionizes hypercar race

Logan Sargeant: The Rising Star Set to Ignite the World Endurance Championship with Ford in 2027!

In a groundbreaking move that has sent shockwaves through the motorsport community, Logan Sargeant, the former Williams F1 driver, is set to take the wheel of a Ford hypercar in the highly anticipated 2027 World Endurance Championship (WEC). This monumental announcement comes on the heels of a thrilling partnership between Ford and Red Bull Powertrains, who will provide crucial technical support to develop an engine that promises to be a game-changer in the hypercar realm.

Sargeant, who boasts 36 F1 starts and clinched a point at his home race, the United States Grand Prix in 2023, is ready to shift gears and tackle new challenges. After being let go by Williams post-2024 Dutch Grand Prix, the 25-year-old driver briefly stepped away from the racing scene, only to make a triumphant return with two notable appearances in the IMSA series and a rookie test in Bahrain last November.

This is not just a return; it’s a comeback with a vengeance! Ford’s entry into the hypercar class in 2027 places them squarely alongside racing titans like Ferrari and McLaren, and Sargeant is set to be one of the key figures in their quest for glory. Joining him in this high-octane lineup are racing veterans Mike Rockenfeller, a Le Mans winner with Audi in 2010, and Sebastian Priaulx, solidifying Ford’s roster for the formidable challenge ahead.

But that’s not all! Before the hypercar showdown, Sargeant will also be gearing up for Proton’s LMGT3 campaign in 2026, partnering with Italian talents Giammarco Levorato and Stefano Gattuso in the number 88 car. This strategic move not only sharpens his skills but also builds a robust foundation for the hypercar assault to come.

Dan Sayers, the Ford Racing Hypercar Programme Manager, couldn’t contain his excitement, stating, “Having an American back in a Ford at Le Mans feels right. It’s a nod to giants like Dan Gurney and AJ Foyt, who showed the world in 1967 what happens when American grit meets global ambition.” He emphasized that they are not waiting for 2027 to make their mark; the team is actively building and refining processes to ensure they are race-ready under the most demanding conditions.

Ford’s hypercar, based on an Oreca LMP2 chassis, will feature an innovative naturally-aspirated, 5.4-litre V8 engine crafted entirely in-house—an unprecedented first for the company. The collaboration with Red Bull Powertrains is set to revolutionize Ford’s WEC project, as both entities work in tandem to push the boundaries of performance and engineering.

Sayers proclaimed, “To build a Hypercar programme from a blank sheet of paper to a Le Mans start-line in just two years is, by any objective measure, almost impossible, but at Ford Racing, making the impossible possible is the only way we know how to work.” He highlighted the significance of the engine, positioned as the very soul of the car. “When you hear a Ford coming down the Mulsanne Straight at three in the morning, you shouldn’t have to look at the badge to know who it is.”

With the iconic Coyote engine architecture already powering their Dark Horse R, GT4, and GT3 programs, Ford is poised to reclaim its legacy in endurance racing. As they gear up for this monumental challenge, the excitement is palpable. The countdown to 2027 begins now, and all eyes will be on Logan Sargeant and Ford as they strive to etch their names into the annals of motorsport history.

This team isn’t just building a car; they’re crafting a legacy. Buckle up, because America’s Race Team is coming for the world, and they are ready to unleash the roar of a new era in endurance racing!
