Lions Bring Back Multi-Sport WR for Sixth Season in Detroit

In a surprising move, the Detroit Lions are already making plans for the 2024 season. They have brought back a group of players on reserve/futures contracts, including the talented wide receiver Tom Kennedy. Kennedy, a multi-sport star, has had multiple stints on the Lions’ roster since 2019 and rejoined the practice squad last season.

Kennedy’s return to the Lions’ practice squad came after veteran Marvin Jones Jr. left the team for personal reasons. The team signed Kennedy to add depth to their receiving corps. Since joining the Lions as an undrafted free agent in 2019, Kennedy has made a total of 14 receptions for 195 yards over five seasons.

Before his time in the NFL, Kennedy made a name for himself as a multi-sport athlete in college. He played both lacrosse and football at Bryant University. In 2018, Kennedy was drafted by the Boston Cannons of Major League Lacrosse, making him the first person to play in both the NFL and a professional lacrosse league.

Lions fans have grown fond of Kennedy, especially after his impressive performance in the 2021 season finale. He connected with Kalif Raymond for a 75-yard touchdown pass, showcasing his skills and earning the admiration of fans. Kennedy continued to shine in the 2022 preseason, solidifying his place on the team.

With Kennedy back in the mix, the Lions are looking forward to the 2024 season and the potential contributions he can make to the team. As the offseason progresses, it will be interesting to see how Kennedy and the other players on reserve/futures contracts compete for roster spots.

The Lions have made some significant moves for the upcoming season. They have brought back nine players on futures contracts, including linebacker Mitchell Agude, receiver Maurice Alexander, offensive lineman Matt Farniok, running back Jake Funk, offensive tackle Connor Galvin, cornerback Craig James, safety Brandon Joseph, offensive lineman Michael Niese, and defensive lineman Chris Smith.

One area of concern for the team is the wide receiver position. With Josh Reynolds and Donovan Peoples-Jones both becoming unrestricted free agents, there is a need for someone to fill the void. Reynolds, who was the team’s second-highest targeted receiver, could potentially return, but overall depth is also necessary.

The pressure is mounting for the Lions as they head into the next season. After a heartbreaking loss to the San Francisco 49ers in the NFC Championship game, Lions head coach Dan Campbell acknowledged the difficulty of reaching that point again. He emphasized the need for the team to maintain their hunger and work ethic in order to have a shot at returning to the playoffs. Campbell understands that it will be twice as hard to reach the same level next year and believes that the team must stay focused and determined.

In the end, the Lions are facing a challenging road ahead. They have made some smart moves in retaining key players, but there are still areas that need attention, particularly at the wide receiver position. The team is aware of the obstacles they will face in the upcoming season and is prepared to put in the necessary work to overcome them.
