After many years under the leadership of Bernie Ecclestone and CVC, Formula 1 was acquired by Liberty Media in 2017. Since then, the championship has completely changed and entered a phase of growth. Now, the American company is looking to add MotoGP to its portfolio, which would make the main classes of motorsport and motorcycle racing owned by the same entity for the first time in history.
According to Expansión, an economic newspaper, Liberty Media is currently negotiating the possible acquisition of the MotoGP promoter, Dorna Sports, from its majority shareholder since 2006 – Bridgepoint. The company, whose CEO is Carmelo Ezpeleta, has a value of 4 billion euros and offers below that amount will not be considered.
There is still a long way to go from interest to closing the deal. Officially, Dorna Sports is not for sale, yet there are several alleged interested parties – such as Amazon, Disney, and Netflix, or the investment funds CVC and KKR. Last December, Ezpeleta told La Repubblica newspaper that the sale of Dorna is not strictly necessary, but admitted that there were negotiations.
