Liam Lawson’s Red Bull Hopes Threatened by Yuki Tsunoda in Final Races of 2024

Liam Lawson is set to replace Daniel Ricciardo for the final six races of the 2024 Formula 1 season, offering him a crucial opportunity to prove his worth for a potential full-time seat at Red Bull. The 22-year-old Kiwi driver, who impressed last year while filling in for Ricciardo, is now aiming to secure a spot alongside Max Verstappen. However, his ambitions may face a significant challenge from his AlphaTauri teammate, Yuki Tsunoda.

Lawson made waves in 2023 by outqualifying Verstappen at the Singapore Grand Prix and delivering solid performances, but he was left without a seat for the 2024 season. Now back on the grid, he has the chance to make his case for a promotion to Red Bull Racing as Sergio Perez’s future with the team remains uncertain. However, to do so, Lawson must outperform Tsunoda across the remaining six rounds.

Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko has made it clear that Tsunoda is also in contention for Perez’s seat, meaning Lawson and Tsunoda are in a head-to-head battle for a coveted spot at the senior team. Tsunoda, who has grown in maturity and consistency over the past two seasons, has proven his capabilities by outperforming former Formula E champion Nyck de Vries and even ending De Vries’ F1 career.

Lawson’s challenge is further complicated by Tsunoda’s familiarity with the VCARB-01, having driven it throughout the 2024 season. The Kiwi will need to push himself to the limit and avoid mistakes if he is to make a strong case for a Red Bull seat. Tsunoda’s experience and performance under pressure mean Lawson must deliver consistently strong results to stand out.

As the two drivers prepare for their upcoming race in Austin, Texas, the battle between Lawson and Tsunoda is one of the most intriguing storylines of the season’s final stretch. The outcome could shape the future of both drivers, as well as Red Bull’s plans for 2025.
