Fearless Liam Lawson: Ready to Tackle Max Verstappen’s Reign at Red Bull in 2025 – “Not ‘afraid’ of Max Verstappen as Red Bull teammate”

BARCELONA, SPAIN - JUNE 03: Max Verstappen of the Netherlands and Oracle Red Bull Racing and Liam Lawson of New Zealand and Oracle Red Bull Racing talk in the garage during final practice ahead of the F1 Grand Prix of Spain at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya on June 03, 2023 in Barcelona, Spain. The Red Bull second seat—a position feared as much as it is coveted.

For Liam Lawson, 2025 presents the opportunity of a lifetime as he steps up to partner Max Verstappen at Red Bull. But with this promotion comes a daunting challenge: can he succeed where so many before him have failed?

Since Daniel Ricciardo’s departure in 2018, Red Bull has struggled to find a worthy second driver, cycling through names like Pierre Gasly, Alex Albon, and most recently, Sergio Perez—all of whom failed to consistently match Verstappen.

Now, Lawson will attempt to break that cycle.

Will Red Bull Truly Support Liam Lawson?

The biggest question surrounding Lawson’s promotion is whether Red Bull will give him the tools to thrive, or if he will be another sacrificial lamb in Verstappen’s shadow.

🔹 Perez’s struggles were evident—despite staying on the team for four years, he never truly challenged Verstappen.
🔹 The 280-point gap between them in 2024 highlighted the massive performance divide.
🔹 Red Bull’s track record with second drivers suggests limited patience for underperformance.

Yet, Red Bull seems to be playing the long game with Lawson. His 2025 debut isn’t just about this season—it’s a test for the team’s long-term future.

Lawson’s Long-Term Importance: Verstappen Insurance?

Red Bull’s faith in Lawson isn’t just about finding a better No. 2 driver—it’s about preparing for life after Max Verstappen.

The Dutch superstar has hinted at potential exit options, especially amid Red Bull’s internal power struggles. If Verstappen ever decides to walk away, Red Bull needs a driver ready to step up.

💬 Why Lawson is crucial for Red Bull’s future:
🔹 If Verstappen leaves, Red Bull needs a stable replacement.
🔹 If Verstappen stays, Red Bull still needs a strong second driver to challenge for the Constructors’ title.
🔹 Unlike Gasly and Albon, Lawson has already proven he can handle pressure (as seen in his 2023 substitute performances for Ricciardo at AlphaTauri).

Can Lawson Challenge Verstappen?

Let’s be realistic—no one is expecting Lawson to dethrone Max Verstappen overnight. But his primary task is to close the gap to the reigning four-time World Champion.

🔹 If Lawson can match expectations and improve steadily, he could solidify his place as Red Bull’s future.
🔹 If he struggles early but shows resilience, Red Bull might exercise patience—a luxury they didn’t afford Gasly or Albon.
🔹 If he fails to adapt quickly, he could be out just as fast as those before him.

The Verdict: Is This the Start of a New Red Bull Era?

🚀 Liam Lawson’s 2025 season isn’t just about being Verstappen’s teammate—it’s about proving he belongs at the top.
🚀 If he delivers, Red Bull finally has the long-term solution they’ve been searching for.
🚀 If he falters, the Red Bull second-seat curse continues.

One thing is for certain—the pressure is on, and the F1 world will be watching.
