Liam Lawson, the young racing prodigy, has opened up about a monumental regret following his abrupt exit from Red Bull Racing after just two races this season. In an exclusive interview, Lawson expressed his disappointment at missing out on the invaluable opportunity to learn from none other than four-time world champion Max Verstappen.

The New Zealand driver was initially ecstatic when he secured the chance to step into the shoes of Sergio Perez, especially after impressing the team with his performances while filling in for Daniel Ricciardo late last season. However, his dream quickly turned into a nightmare as he faced the harsh reality of racing in the second Red Bull seat—a position notorious for being a graveyard for talent.

Lawson’s stint with Red Bull began with high hopes, but soon he found himself caught in a downward spiral of misfortune and challenges. The season kicked off with a disastrous crash in the chaotic conditions of the opening race, followed by a disappointing 12th-place finish in China. These setbacks not only hampered his performance but also cut short his chances of gaining crucial insights from Verstappen.

Critics have been vocal about Red Bull’s handling of Lawson, questioning why the team failed to give the 23-year-old more time to develop. It’s no secret that learning from Verstappen—widely regarded as one of the most talented drivers in the history of F1—could have provided Lawson with insights that might have changed the trajectory of his career.

In his candid reflection, Lawson stated, “I was very excited. I was very excited to have that opportunity to basically see everything that he was doing in detail.” He emphasized the significance of the detailed data shared among teams, noting, “It’s very simple data, but as a driver, it’s the main stuff that we’re looking at—speed traces, where somebody’s braking, throttle placements, gears, things like that.”

Despite having access to data comparisons across the grid, Lawson lamented, “In two weekends, it’s very hard to take too much from that.” The clock was ticking, and Lawson was acutely aware that his window to absorb the nuances of Verstappen’s driving style was rapidly closing.

As Lawson returns to his sister team, the struggles continue, but recent performances suggest he’s finding his rhythm again. Meanwhile, the F1 community watches closely, eager to see how this young talent will rebound from the turbulent start to his season. What remains clear is Lawson’s desire to learn from the best—a desire that, for now, remains a tantalizing opportunity lost.
