The Formula 1 grid is set to witness a new dynamic at Red Bull Racing in the 2025 season as Liam Lawson replaces the axed Sergio Perez. Tasked with partnering Max Verstappen, a four-time World Champion, Lawson faces what many consider the toughest teammate challenge in motorsport.

Lawson’s Outlook: Balancing Excitement and Pressure

The 23-year-old New Zealander has expressed his excitement at stepping into one of the most competitive cars on the grid. Lawson is aware of the monumental task ahead but seems determined to make the most of the opportunity.

“There’s definitely pros and cons to that. I think where my head is at, obviously, I’m just looking at the pros, and for me, it’s super exciting,” Lawson shared. “I know it’s going to be extremely tough, a lot of tracks I’ve never been to, but to be in a car that’s just won the World Championship, as a driver, that’s extremely exciting.”

Learning from Verstappen’s Dominance

Lawson has also praised Verstappen, noting the Dutchman’s unique ability to remain calm under immense pressure and deliver consistently.

“Little things, giving me sort of little bits of advice, mostly on the mindset of how he goes about it. He’s obviously a very relaxed guy outside of the car, and he manages to push away a lot of the pressure,” Lawson said. “For me, that was something to watch and learn from.”

Lawson’s comments reflect not only his respect for Verstappen but also his eagerness to absorb lessons from a driver operating at the peak of the sport. However, Verstappen’s dominance over his teammates—including Perez, Daniel Ricciardo, and Pierre Gasly—sets a daunting precedent for Lawson.

A High-Stakes Opportunity

Red Bull’s choice to promote Lawson signals a fresh direction. The team’s faith in the Kiwi is a testament to his talent, showcased during his stint with VCARB in 2024. However, the team’s expectations will be sky-high, as they aim to reclaim the Constructors’ Championship from McLaren in 2025.

While Lawson acknowledges the challenges, he is aware of the scrutiny he will face if his performances don’t meet expectations. Red Bull has a history of making mid-season driver changes, and Lawson will need to hit the ground running from the Australian Grand Prix.

The Verdict

The 2025 Formula 1 season promises a fascinating narrative for Red Bull Racing. As Verstappen seeks his fifth title, Lawson’s ability to adapt and deliver will be pivotal. If he can hold his own and contribute significantly to the team’s efforts, he could solidify his place in F1’s elite.

For fans and pundits alike, all eyes will be on the young Kiwi as he tackles the sport’s ultimate proving ground.
