Despite qualifying 19th fastest, a grid penalty for Yuki Tsunoda will push Lawson to start 18th on the grid.
The New Zealander, known for his remarkable skills behind the wheel, opened up about the unprecedented failure, citing it as a “first-time” occurrence in his career. “We’ve been struggling to optimize the tire performance from the get-go. In an attempt to rectify this, we opted for a build lap at the start of Q1 to try and bring the tires up to temperature. Unfortunately, despite our efforts, we simply couldn’t find the grip we needed,” Lawson revealed to the press.
The strategy shift, aimed at hitting the sweet spot for tire performance, proved to be a gamble that did not pay off for the Racing Bulls team. Lawson expressed his frustration at the unforeseen turn of events, especially given his prior comfort and success with the C6 tires in previous races.
With the upcoming race posing a significant challenge due to the less-than-ideal starting position, Lawson acknowledged the demanding task ahead, stating, “It is going to be hard from where we are starting, so we’ll have to do something quite special.”
