Liam Lawson Dismisses Toto Wolff’s Bold Claim: Red Bull’s Power Unit Isn’t a Full Second Ahead
In a surprising turn of events, Formula 1 sensation Liam Lawson has taken a lighthearted jab at Toto Wolff’s audacious assertion that Red Bull’s new power unit boasts a staggering one-second advantage over its competitors. This bold claim comes in the wake of Red Bull’s first venture into developing its own power unit, a project executed in collaboration with the automotive giant Ford.
The excitement is palpable as Red Bull’s engine has not only passed the rigorous tests at the Barcelona shakedown last month without a hitch but has also piqued the interest of various drivers and team leaders at the Bahrain event. Wolff, the Mercedes team principal, has gone so far as to label Red Bull as the benchmark team, praising their new engine’s performance as potentially a second faster per lap than any rival.
However, Lawson, who is also piloting the Red Bull power unit for the sister Racing Bulls squad, reacted with bemusement. “One second faster than everybody! Who said that?” he quipped when addressing the media, including RacingNews365. When informed that it was indeed Wolff who made the remark, Lawson couldn’t help but burst into laughter: “My God.”
Despite the playful dismissal, Lawson did concede that early tests indicate promising numbers from the new power unit. “We’ll find out in Melbourne,” he remarked, hinting at the upcoming race’s significance. “Honestly, at the moment, the power unit is working very, very well, which is good.”
Yet, the young driver maintained a cautious stance regarding performance metrics, emphasizing the difficulty in gauging their true standing against competitors. “In terms of performance numbers, it is so hard to tell because we have no idea what anybody else is doing. On the performance side, we definitely think it’s strong. I wouldn’t say it’s one second faster than everybody. But we’ll find out pretty soon. All okay so far.”
As the F1 community eagerly anticipates the Melbourne Grand Prix, all eyes will be on Lawson and Red Bull to see if they can live up to the hype or if Wolff’s claims will prove to be mere bravado. The clock is ticking, and the excitement is building—who will emerge as the true powerhouse of the season? Only time will tell!
