Liam Lawson Credits Daniel Ricciardo as a Lifeline Amid Turbulent F1 Season

In the high-octane world of Formula 1, where every second counts and fortunes can flip in an instant, Liam Lawson has emerged from a stormy start to the 2025 season with a surprising ally: Daniel Ricciardo. The rising Kiwi star, who began his F1 journey alongside Max Verstappen at Red Bull, found himself in a precarious position after being demoted to Racing Bulls following the Chinese Grand Prix. Yet, rather than succumbing to the pressure, Lawson revealed that Ricciardo’s guidance proved invaluable during his most challenging moments.

Ricciardo’s Remarkable Exit and Lawson’s Ascent

Daniel Ricciardo, a name synonymous with F1 success, quietly stepped away from the sport after the 2024 Singapore Grand Prix, leaving fans and pundits alike stunned. With an impressive eight race wins and a tenure that spanned over a decade, his departure lacked the grand farewell that many believed he deserved. Instead of bitterness, Ricciardo chose to uplift the very driver who had taken his place—Liam Lawson.

As the reserve driver for both Red Bull and Racing Bulls, Lawson was thrust into the limelight when Ricciardo suffered a hand injury during the 2023 Dutch Grand Prix. This unexpected opportunity catapulted Lawson into the racing spotlight, igniting his F1 career just as he appeared to be fading from the Red Bull roster.

A Turning Point for Lawson

After a tumultuous 2024 season where Ricciardo was overlooked for a mid-season return, it became evident that the veteran was no longer part of Red Bull’s plans. Lawson, meanwhile, solidified his position at Racing Bulls alongside Yuki Tsunoda, before being promoted to the senior team for the 2025 season. However, this move quickly proved disastrous as Lawson struggled to adapt to the challenging RB22 car.

Faced with the possibility of mental collapse under extreme pressure, Red Bull management made a bold decision to swap Lawson with Tsunoda. This strategic move was designed not only to bolster the performance of Red Bull’s second car but also to protect Lawson from spiraling into despair.

Ricciardo: The Unsung Mentor

Throughout this arduous journey, Lawson found an unexpected source of support in Ricciardo. “He’s been somebody that I obviously looked up to when I was very young,” Lawson shared during the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix weekend. “After working closely with him, I developed a huge amount of respect for how everything went down last year, especially how respectful he was towards me. That never changed.”

As Lawson navigated the high-speed challenges of the season, he frequently reached out to Ricciardo for advice. “Every time I picked up the phone to ask for advice, he was always there to talk,” Lawson expressed, highlighting the deep respect he holds for the man who once stood in his way.

A Resurgence and Future Potential

The turning point for Lawson came mid-season, with Racing Bulls team boss Alan Permane hinting that a breakthrough during the Monaco Grand Prix was pivotal. Although he was overlooked for a return to Red Bull for the following season, Lawson’s performances began to rival those of Isack Hadjar, ultimately earning him another season with Racing Bulls, largely thanks to the mentorship he received from Ricciardo.

As Lawson prepares to face new challenges alongside Arvid Lindblad next season, one thing remains clear: the impact of Daniel Ricciardo on his career cannot be overstated. In a sport where the pressure can be relentless, having a mentor like Ricciardo has not only helped Lawson survive but thrive, turning potential disaster into an opportunity for growth and success in the fast-paced realm of Formula 1.

As fans eagerly anticipate the next chapter in Lawson’s career, one can only wonder what further surprises await in the thrilling world of motorsport.
