Liam Lawson Apologizes to Sergio Perez for Heated Gesture During Mexico GP Tension

Liam Lawson, RB’s rising star, issued a public apology to Sergio Perez after a heated mid-race incident at the Mexico City Grand Prix led him to make an unprofessional gesture towards the Red Bull driver. The fiery exchange during the race not only showcased the pressure surrounding Lawson’s potential bid for a Red Bull seat in 2025 but also reflected the high stakes between the two drivers.

The incident unfolded on Lap 19 when Perez attempted an aggressive move on Lawson into Turn 4, resulting in significant damage to Perez’s Red Bull RB20. Later, after overtaking Perez on the track, Lawson gave the Mexican driver a one-finger salute. Speaking to the media, Lawson admitted he let emotions get the better of him. “It’s one of those heat-of-the-moment things,” Lawson said. “He spent half the lap blocking me and trying to ruin my race. I was upset, but it’s no excuse—I shouldn’t have done it, and I apologize.”

Lawson’s frustration stemmed from their earlier clash. “I tried to give him space, but he came in very late. He drove me off the track and then didn’t leave room in Turn 5,” he explained. “It wasn’t my intention to escalate things, but it’s a tight margin when you’re battling hard on the track.”

The incident caught the attention of Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko, who weighed in with a critical perspective, saying, “Checo was very upset with Lawson. We need to have a talk. Lawson is a tough racer, but there needs to be more respect, especially with drivers from sister teams.”

Perez didn’t hold back in his review of the exchange, calling Lawson’s behavior “unnecessary” and urging the young driver to show more respect. “When you’re new to F1, you’re hungry, but you also need to respect those around you, on and off the track,” Perez remarked.

The race saw Lawson involved in additional on-track drama, including a collision with Williams’ Franco Colapinto, which forced Lawson to change his front wing. Reflecting on the encounter, Lawson acknowledged the mishap. “It was clumsy and avoidable,” he admitted, noting that neither driver was entirely at fault.

With the high-stakes atmosphere surrounding F1 rookies and established drivers, Lawson’s apology underscores the intense pressures each driver faces. As he contends for a full-time Red Bull seat, this moment could serve as a lesson in composure and respect for the young driver, particularly with future opportunities on the line.
