Lewis Hamilton’s shocking winter retreat: why the F1 star is unplugging from everything

Lewis Hamilton is ready to hit the reset button as he prepares for a much-needed winter break from the relentless grind of Formula 1. After an incredibly challenging debut season with Ferrari in 2025, where he shockingly failed to secure a single podium finish in main races, the seven-time world champion is craving a complete disconnect from the sport that has defined his life.

Hamilton’s struggle has been palpable, marked by a disappointing performance that culminated at the season finale in Abu Dhabi. From a dismal 16th on the starting grid, he clawed his way to an 8th place finish, battling against Esteban Ocon and stumbling behind a Haas car. This final race was a stark reflection of a tumultuous year, where the expectations of joining Ferrari clashed harshly with the reality of underwhelming results.

Reflecting on the season, Hamilton pointed to his lone bright spot: a sprint victory in China, which was the only time he found himself on the podium throughout the entire year. This lack of success is unprecedented in his storied career, amplifying feelings of frustration and fatigue. As he grapples with the weight of a season that failed to deliver, Hamilton acknowledges the toll that off-track obligations — from photo shoots to commercial commitments — have taken on his mental well-being.

“I’m just focused on the holidays right now. I want to disconnect and not talk to anyone. No one will reach me this winter. My phone is going into the trash,” he declared, showcasing his urgent need to escape the “matrix” of F1 life. “I can’t wait to step away from it all. Every week is filled with sessions and commitments, and I long for the day I won’t have to do that.”

Amid this personal turmoil, Hamilton took a moment to celebrate his compatriot Lando Norris, who clinched his first World Championship. “I’m really, really happy for him,” Hamilton said, reflecting on the significance of Norris’s achievement. “Winning your first World Championship is incredibly special, and the UK continues to produce great drivers. I know exactly how it feels to be in that position, and I’m proud of him.”

As Hamilton gears up for a much-deserved break, fans are left wondering what the future holds for the iconic driver. Will this time away from the spotlight rejuvenate him for a fresh start next season? One thing is certain: Hamilton’s determination to come back stronger is unwavering, and the racing world will be watching closely.
