Hamilton Calls Out Verstappen’s “Unchanged” Aggression, Doubts Red Bull Star Will Alter Approach Without Rule Reforms

After over a decade of dominance, Lewis Hamilton will bid farewell to Mercedes at the end of this season, setting the stage for a seismic shift in Formula 1 as he joins Ferrari in 2025. The seven-time champion’s departure has left Mercedes scrambling, with team principal Toto Wolff admitting the exit came at a challenging time, as key driver alternatives were already off the table.

When news broke in February that Hamilton had activated an exit clause to join Ferrari, the F1 world was stunned. For Mercedes, however, Wolff had sensed the move might come. “I absolutely had it on my radar that Lewis would go,” Wolff revealed in a recent interview for Motorsport Magazine. “I just couldn’t understand why he’d change to another team before we knew if we were going to be competitive.”

Caught off-guard by the timing, Mercedes found itself with limited options, as other top drivers like Charles Leclerc and Lando Norris had recently signed contract extensions. “It didn’t give me any time to react,” Wolff admitted. “I had to make emergency calls to our partners, and I missed out on negotiations with other drivers.”

Despite the shock, Wolff sees a silver lining: Hamilton leaving on his own terms saves Mercedes from facing the difficult decision of sidelining a legend. “It avoids the moment where we need to tell the sport’s most iconic driver that we want to stop,” Wolff explained. Mercedes’ one-plus-one-year contract with Hamilton, which left room for flexibility, was part of Wolff’s forward-thinking approach. “I need to look at the next generation. It’s the same in football. Managers like Sir Alex Ferguson or Pep Guardiola anticipated it and brought in junior players.”

With Hamilton’s exit, Mercedes has revealed that 18-year-old sensation Andrea Kimi Antonelli will step into his seat, forming a new partnership with George Russell. As Hamilton heads to Ferrari at 40, Mercedes is investing in the future, grooming a promising young talent to take up the mantle of one of F1’s most storied seats.

The Hamilton-Ferrari partnership in 2025 promises to be one of the most captivating chapters in F1 history, while Mercedes’ bold move signals a new era. With the arrival of Antonelli, Wolff is betting on the next generation to carry the Silver Arrows forward, marking the end of one dynasty and the dawn of another.
