Seven-time Formula 1 World Champion, Lewis Hamilton, recently shared his regret over missing a golden opportunity to star in a major Hollywood film. The revelation, which left Hamilton ‘crying inside’, was a missed chance to add an acting credit to his already illustrious CV.
Hamilton’s demanding Formula 1 career, coupled with his recent move to Scuderia Ferrari after more than ten successful years with Mercedes, leaves him with little spare time. Despite this, the British racing sensation has managed to live a glamorous lifestyle, complete with red-carpet appearances, fashion ventures, and diversity initiatives. Recently, he has also shown a keen interest in the world of film.
According to a recent profile in Time magazine, Hamilton is currently dabbling in script development, with a comedy and a pet-centered film in the works. However, his most significant brush with Hollywood came when avid racing fan and renowned actor, Tom Cruise, introduced him to director Joseph Kosinski.
The introduction was in relation to a potential role in the then-upcoming movie, ‘Top Gun: Maverick.’ Regrettably, Hamilton had to pass on the opportunity due to a scheduling conflict with his racing commitments. When Cruise later screened the film for Hamilton in London, the racer confessed to Time magazine, “I was crying a bit inside. Ah, that could have been me!”
Despite this setback, Hamilton’s connection with Kosinski paid dividends. The director, inspired by their conversation, had a brainwave about creating a Formula 1-themed movie. One of his first calls was to Hamilton.
The resulting film, ‘F1,’ set to hit theaters in late June this year, saw Hamilton serve as a producer. This gave him another impressive credit to add to his resume. As a part of his role, Hamilton leveraged his connections, introducing the filmmakers to Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali. This pivotal introduction granted the team unprecedented access to tracks, cars, and personnel, setting the stage for a must-see feature.
As far as Hamilton’s future on-screen appearances are concerned, the jury is still out. While he has shown interest, his rigorous racing commitments might make it challenging. However, fans and movie buffs alike will undoubtedly be keeping their eyes peeled for a potential Hollywood debut from the racing legend.
