Wednesday proved to be a day buzzing with excitement as Ferrari leveraged one of their two sanctioned filming days for a test drive of the SF-25. The test drive, undertaken at Fiorano, had the world of Formula 1 holding its breath as Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc put the vehicle through a 200-kilometre trial. The anticipation was heightened as this was Hamilton’s inaugural run in the car of his new team, ahead of the 2025 Formula 1 season.
Ferrari’s last taste of championship victory came in 2008 when they clinched the Constructors’ title. Interestingly, Hamilton played a key part in the narrative, as he denied Felipe Massa the Drivers’ Championship in a thrilling season finale. Since then, Ferrari’s pursuit of ultimate glory has hit a few bumps, despite the involvement of numerous world-class drivers and team bosses.
The unveiling of the SF-25, however, has sparked renewed optimism among the Ferrari faithful. The previous season saw McLaren narrowly outperform Ferrari in the Constructors’ championship, but a late-season surge by Ferrari hinted at their untapped potential. Despite a mid-season hiccup in development, Ferrari bounced back to end as one of the pace-setters.
The SF-25, while retaining the central performance concept of its predecessor, features crucial enhancements such as the switch to pull-rod front suspension aimed at boosting aerodynamic efficiency. Loic Serra, the Chassis technical director, underscored that this move was driven by the need to expand development possibilities, as the previous configurations had hit their peak.
Hamilton, after his maiden run in the car, shared his initial impressions with Sky Italy. “The car is good. While it’s early days, we didn’t encounter any issues today. It’s my first Ferrari and it’s almost surreal. I am savoring every moment,” he said.
Hamilton, while interacting with the press, accepted that he is still getting the hang of his new surroundings. “It’s premature to predict how the year will unfold. What we do know is that the competition among the top teams will be intense,” he asserted. He also appreciated the unique setup of Ferrari, with its track adjacent to the factory, offering an unmatched level of convenience. Hamilton commended the team’s efforts in integrating him into the structure effortlessly.
On being queried if Ferrari could end their title drought, Hamilton exuded confidence. “Having been part of two world championship-winning teams, I can tell a winning team when I see one. The passion in Ferrari is unparalleled. They possess all the elements required to win a world championship. Now, it’s all about synchronizing all these pieces,” he stated.
Hamilton lauded Ferrari’s leadership, including the likes of Fred Vasseur, John Elkann, and Benedetto Vigna, for nurturing an environment that blends ambition with pragmatism. With an unyielding resolve to better themselves and an obsessive attention to detail, Ferrari is gearing up to reinstate their championship glory in 2025.
