Lewis Hamilton’s much-touted inception with Ferrari in the 2025 Formula 1 season was overshadowed by performance hiccups and looming disqualification threats, as per Italian media coverage. The Australian Grand Prix, the race under the spotlight, witnessed Hamilton, a seven-time world champion, wrapping up in an underwhelming 10th position. This eventuated in him bagging a mere single point, indicating a dismal performance for the Maranello-based racing squad.

Ferrari’s struggles weren’t limited to Hamilton alone. Charles Leclerc, Hamilton’s teammate, barely managed to cross the finish line in the eighth position. The entire weekend saw Ferrari lagging behind powerhouses like McLaren, Mercedes, and Red Bull. This lackluster performance cast a looming shadow over Ferrari’s race strategy and groundwork.

Motorsport Italia, a reputable source, attributed Ferrari’s Melbourne mishaps to erroneous simulator data, which resulted in an inappropriate car setup. The data-driven car setup resulted in the vehicle running perilously close to the ground on the actual track.

Generally, teams strive to maintain their cars as low as possible to increase aerodynamic efficiency. However, Formula 1 regulations permit only a specific degree of scraping along the ground. Ferrari, which saw a disqualification in the 2023 U.S. Grand Prix due to overuse of skid blocks, was cautious not to repeat the same blunder.

In their bid to adhere to FIA regulations, Ferrari decided to tweak their setup right before the race. This eleventh-hour alteration, although compliant, had a detrimental effect on their overall race pace. Consequently, both Hamilton and Leclerc found it challenging to compete at the front.

The troubles faced in Australia could spell a significant problem for Ferrari’s SF-25 design, especially if the simulator accuracy continues to be a hurdle. Ferrari, which is aiming to clinch its first championship title since 2008, will have to rectify these discrepancies as the season advances. This is crucial to ensure that their championship dreams do not go up in smoke.
