Lewis Hamilton’s Ferrari Journey: From Hopes to Hurdles – Is History Repeating Itself?

In a shocking turn of events, Lewis Hamilton’s first season with Ferrari in 2025 has been nothing short of a nightmare for the seven-time world champion. After making a highly publicized switch from Mercedes, Hamilton has failed to secure a single podium finish throughout the year, marking the first time in his illustrious career that he has faced such a dismal fate. As he approaches his 41st birthday, the pressure is mounting, and the comparisons to fellow racing legend Sebastian Vettel are becoming increasingly unavoidable.

The statistics paint a bleak picture: Hamilton finished a staggering 86 points behind his teammate Charles Leclerc in the drivers’ standings, raising eyebrows and questions about his ability to adapt to the iconic Scuderia. At the Belgian Grand Prix in July, Hamilton opened up about his struggles, revealing his proactive approach to turn his fortunes around. He disclosed that he has put together several “documents” outlining key changes for Ferrari, aiming to enhance communication within the team and improve their race weekend strategies.

Hamilton’s commitment to making a difference is commendable. He submitted his first set of proposals after just a few races, and in a bold move, he followed up with two more documents during the critical three-week gap between the British and Belgian Grands Prix. Reports suggest that a fourth dossier was dispatched after the Singapore Grand Prix in early October. Yet, despite these efforts, Hamilton’s willingness to take the reins has drawn criticism, particularly from former Ferrari team principal Maurizio Arrivabene.

Arrivabene, who led Ferrari from 2015 to 2018, has accused Hamilton of falling into the same trap as Vettel, who famously sent similar documents during his tenure. “Sebastian Vettel also sent such dossiers. He wrote, spoke and shared everything,” Arrivabene stated to Sky Italy. He dismissed Vettel’s contributions as “almost useless,” insinuating that when drivers start acting like engineers, it signals the beginning of their downfall. “When a driver starts playing engineer, that’s it. Then it’s really over,” he emphasized.

The advice echoes previous sentiments from Arrivabene, who, during the tumultuous 2016 season, publicly reminded Vettel to concentrate on his primary responsibilities. Recently, John Elkann, Ferrari’s president, reinforced this message, urging both Hamilton and Leclerc to “focus on driving” and “talk less” after an underwhelming performance in Brazil.

Interestingly, Hamilton had reached out to Vettel for guidance before making the leap to Ferrari. The two-time contact reportedly occurred during the 2024 season, paving the way for Hamilton to adopt some of Vettel’s methods, including meticulous note-taking during pre-season testing. This influence is evident, as Hamilton is seen grappling with the complexities of his new position.

Vettel, reflecting on Hamilton’s challenges, acknowledged that the British driver needs “a lot of things to come together” for his stint at Ferrari to be successful. “The longer it takes, the harder it becomes,” he cautioned, emphasizing the importance of timing and team dynamics in achieving victory. Despite the obstacles, Vettel believes that Hamilton deserves a fair shot if everything aligns.

As Hamilton navigates his tumultuous first year at Ferrari, fans and analysts alike are left wondering: Will he break the cycle of disappointment that has plagued other champions in red? Or will he become another cautionary tale in the storied history of Ferrari? The racing world is on the edge of its seat, eager to see how this saga unfolds.
