Lewis Hamilton shatters Barcelona testing records: Ferrari, Red Bull, McLaren fuel fierce rivalry

Lewis Hamilton Dominates Barcelona Shakedown: A New Era for F1 Begins!

In a thrilling showcase of speed and endurance, Lewis Hamilton has set the pace during the Barcelona shakedown, leaving competitors Ferrari, Red Bull, and McLaren in his rearview mirror. As the curtain fell on a week of intense testing at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya, Hamilton emerged victorious, clocking a blistering time of 1:16.348 in the Ferrari SF-26. This impressive feat not only marks him as the fastest driver of the week but also sends shockwaves through the paddock as teams gear up for the monumental 2026 regulations.

Friday’s final testing day saw a frenzy of activity, with eight teams hitting the track. Heavyweights Ferrari, Red Bull, and the reigning champions McLaren were joined by Aston Martin, who celebrated their Adrian Newey-designed car’s first full day of action, piloted by none other than Fernando Alonso. Meanwhile, Haas, Audi, Alpine, and Cadillac also clocked significant mileage, each team vying for a competitive edge.

Mercedes, the reigning kings of the grid, capped off the week with an astounding total of 500 laps, while their rivals, the Racing Bulls, also met their three-day testing allocations. However, the real drama unfolded on Friday, where unofficial lap times were kept under wraps due to the closed nature of the event. Hamilton’s dazzling lap eclipsed Mercedes’ George Russell’s Thursday time of 1:16.445, showcasing the Ferrari’s potential early in the season. McLaren’s Lando Norris wasn’t far behind, finishing the day with a commendable 1:16.594.

But here’s the catch: pre-season lap times can be deceiving! Teams are often engaged in a complex dance of testing various tire compounds, fuel loads, and engine settings. Despite these factors, Ferrari’s early reliability signals a promising future as they adapt to the sport’s most significant regulatory overhaul to date. With nearly 300 laps logged in the first two days alone, Hamilton and Charles Leclerc combined to add another 145 laps, bringing Ferrari’s total to an impressive 440 for the week.

Ferrari Team Principal Frederic Vasseur expressed optimism, stating, “Overall, it’s a positive session. We experienced both wet and dry conditions, allowing us to cover tons of laps. It’s vital to collect data and prepare for Bahrain under the best conditions.”

McLaren, too, has reason to celebrate, achieving a solid 166 laps despite a fuel system hiccup that sidelined Oscar Piastri on Thursday. Red Bull, with Max Verstappen at the helm of the RB22, completed a respectable 118 laps after recovering from Isack Hadjar’s earlier crash. Aston Martin, fresh off their debut on Thursday, saw Alonso put in 61 laps, affirming their readiness for the challenges ahead.

As the F1 world gears up for the 2026 season, the excitement is palpable. Will Hamilton’s early speed translate into championship dominance? Or will Ferrari’s reliability and McLaren’s resilience turn the tide? One thing is for certain: the stage is set, and the drama is just beginning. Fans can witness every electrifying moment of the 2026 F1 season live on Sky Sports, starting with the Australian Grand Prix from March 6-8. Buckle up—it’s going to be an unforgettable ride!
