The disqualification of Lewis Hamilton in the United States Grand Prix of Formula 1 was a surprise for George Russell – since nothing indicated that the problem in question could occur. The issue is the plank of the flat bottom, with dimensions outside the regulated due to wear.
The #63 stated, quoted by the website gpblog.com, that after the only free practice session, the component did not indicate any problems in the checks carried out:
– It is obvious that with a session in Austin we all did the usual checks after FP1 and the plank looked absolutely fine. So, there was no reason after the practice to make any changes, but it is obvious that we made a big mistake in that.
Russell has no concerns about a possible repetition of the problems in Mexico: ‘I think it is a very different design here. I hope that the nature of this circuit is naturally more conservative, and with three free practice sessions, I do not foresee any problems here’.
