Formula 1’s soaring popularity has turned it into a global phenomenon, but with its rapid growth comes a sharp rise in ticket prices that has made the sport less accessible to fans from the working class. Seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton, known for his activism and advocacy for inclusivity, has called on Formula 1’s decision-makers to address this issue.
Hamilton’s Plea: Bring F1 Closer to All Fans
Hamilton, a key figure in Formula 1’s global boom, expressed his concern about the high costs of attending races. With ticket prices skyrocketing, he believes that many loyal fans, particularly from the lower working class, are being left out.
“The more eyeballs on this sport, it’s not a bad thing. But we always need to make sure that it’s accessible—so it’s not too far out of reach for people that work very hard for their money but cannot afford to get to the race weekend,” Hamilton remarked.
The increasing presence of celebrities at F1 events, especially in Europe, has highlighted a shift in the sport’s audience demographic. While the glitz and glamour bring attention to F1, Hamilton insists the sport must stay true to its roots by remaining inclusive and affordable for everyday fans.
F1’s Boom: A Double-Edged Sword
Since the 2021 season, Formula 1 has seen a surge in popularity, driven by thrilling championships, increased media coverage, and the younger generation’s enthusiasm for the sport. This influx of fans has brought new energy, but it has also contributed to a significant hike in ticket prices, making live race attendance unaffordable for many.
Hamilton’s concerns reflect a larger issue within the sport: balancing its newfound mainstream appeal with its historical fan base. By pricing out the working class, F1 risks alienating a core segment of its supporters.
Beyond Accessibility: The Fight for Inclusivity
In addition to pushing for lower ticket prices, Hamilton reiterated the importance of fostering an inclusive environment in Formula 1. As the only Black driver on the grid, he has long championed diversity and inclusivity in the sport.
“We’ve got a lot of work to do to make sure that the place continues to be more inclusive and that people feel comfortable in the environment. And that people who are hired can sustain and actually keep a job,” he said.
Hamilton has been at the forefront of efforts to create opportunities for people of diverse backgrounds in motorsport. He founded the Hamilton Commission to investigate and improve diversity in the industry and continues to use his platform to advocate for meaningful change.
What Needs to Be Done?
Hamilton’s call to action is clear: Formula 1 must prioritize accessibility and inclusivity as it grows. Lowering ticket prices, especially for marquee events, and introducing initiatives to diversify its workforce could be key steps in ensuring the sport remains relatable and welcoming.
As the 2025 season approaches, F1 has an opportunity to address these challenges and ensure that its expanding global fan base is not only entertained but also represented. Hamilton’s advocacy serves as a reminder that the sport’s success should be shared by all—on and off the track.
