Lewis Hamilton stayed away from the top positions in the qualifying session for the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix. His teammate George Russell showed the potential of the Mercedes with the third fastest time, but the seven-time champion could only manage ninth place.
The #44 told the championship website that, despite the outcome, it was not an unpleasant qualifying session: ‘It was a fun session. Obviously, it wasn’t the result we wanted, but these things happen’.
According to Hamilton, the tuning options followed may not have been ideal for qualifying, but he believes they will be better for the race: ‘I wouldn’t say I’m surprised, I went in a direction with a riskier setup and even for the third free practice it possibly wasn’t the right one, but hopefully it will be the right one for the race’.
