Lewis Hamilton’s Legacy Under Threat: George Russell Claims He Could’ve Stolen Two F1 World Titles from the Champion

A storm is brewing in the world of Formula 1 as George Russell throws shade at the legendary Lewis Hamilton, suggesting that he could have been a multiple-time world champion if fate had placed him alongside the British icon during the dominant Mercedes era. Russell, who joined Mercedes in 2022, boldly stated that he believes he would have snatched a couple of world titles away from Hamilton if they were teammates during that period.

The seven-time world champion, Hamilton, enjoyed unprecedented success from 2014 to 2021, clinching six out of seven world championships and solidifying his status as one of the greatest drivers in the history of the sport. However, Russell’s remarks have ignited speculation and debate among fans and experts alike about what could have been if the young driver had shared the track with Hamilton during his reign.

Russell’s comments to The Athletic added fuel to the fire, “Everybody is in Lewis’ shadow, being team-mates with a seven-time world champion for three years is not straightforward. There was once a time that if you finished ahead of Lewis Hamilton in a championship or in a race, you’d win the race. Or, if you finish ahead of him in the championship, you’d win the championship. If my time was five years prior, you could argue I’d have two championships to my name.”

The tantalizing prospect of George Russell potentially becoming an F1 champion has captivated the imagination of fans, especially considering his impressive performance at the start of the 2025 season. Despite Mercedes facing a pace deficit to McLaren, Russell’s stellar driving has kept him in the championship mix, earning accolades from Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff.

Russell’s convincing display against Hamilton in their final season together at Mercedes, where he outperformed the champion in qualifying on 19 occasions, further fuels the debate surrounding his championship credentials.

As the speculation swirls and fans eagerly await the unfolding drama on the track, one thing remains certain – George Russell is determined to carve his path to glory in Formula 1. With his sights set on controlling his own destiny and cementing his place among the elite drivers of the sport, Russell’s journey promises to be one filled with excitement, ambition, and the relentless pursuit of greatness.
