Rosberg, in a bold statement, pointed out that at 40 years old, Hamilton could be experiencing a natural decline in pace, particularly in qualifying where even the slightest deficits can be game-changing. Drawing comparisons to Fernando Alonso, Rosberg noted that while Alonso remained competitive until he was 40, Hamilton’s decline may have arrived earlier.
“It’s a continuation of last year’s form, where there was already a slight drop, and George had the advantage,” Rosberg told Sky F1. “He also finished ahead in points. The situation remains, lacking a bit here and there, especially with the ultimate pace in qualifying. We know Charles is excellent in qualifying, so Lewis has to dig a bit deeper.”
Rosberg emphasized, “Even the best of all time, at some point, will slow down a bit. This is related to age. When you’re 40, it will happen sooner rather than later. So the question is whether the age has come where you start to get a little slower. Even a tenth makes a huge difference in this sport, especially when facing some of the best from the new generation, like Charles Leclerc, who is considered one of the best qualifiers in the world.”
