Leclerc’s mistake and other highlights from the first free practice of the Miami Grand Prix

Erro de Leclerc e outros destaques do primeiro treino livre do Grande Prêmio de Miami

In preparation for the Abu Dhabi Autonomous Racing League, it was no surprise that Max Verstappen set the fastest time during the practice session for the 2024 Miami Grand Prix. However, the world champion faced challenges along the way.

Verstappen managed to secure the top spot with his final flying lap using the softest Pirelli tire compound (C4). Despite this achievement, there were three other drivers who finished within two tenths of his speed.

The RB20 car did not perform smoothly when Verstappen sought speed in a single lap. He struggled to lock the front axle during braking and fought to maintain control in the high-speed sections.

The track conditions were harsh, with temperatures reaching 54°C and ambient temperatures of 29°C. The tires suffered and did not last long on a track that required careful management of wing levels to maintain speed in a straight line.

Verstappen should have had more speed at his disposal. His fastest lap was not clean, and he made a second attempt with the same set of tires, failing to extract maximum grip.

Oscar Piastri, who finished second, may be the most satisfied driver after FP1. McLaren CEO Zak Brown noted that Piastri’s car had only 50% of the updated parts that the team had brought for this race. In contrast, Piastri’s teammate Lando Norris, who had the full set of parts, finished 16th in FP1. However, Norris did not set a time on the softest tire.

The best lap from Norris, achieved with the hardest tire, was within two tenths of Carlos Sainz’s Ferrari, who set the pace with that compound. Sainz, who will not continue with the team in 2025, finished third overall with the soft tire, concluding a strong session for the Ferrari driver.

On the other hand, Charles Leclerc, who will remain at Ferrari, had a challenging session. He ended up being the slowest of all drivers after getting stuck on track during his fourth lap, resulting in a red flag to recover his car. Leclerc’s Ferrari collided with the inside curb at Turn 16, causing him to spin. Additionally, he struggled to select reverse gear and get back on track. This setback will likely affect Leclerc’s performance during the sprint qualifying, as he lacks proper familiarity with the circuit and tires.

During the early part of the session, the Mercedes drivers closely competed on the medium tire, while the Red Bulls focused on long runs using the same tire. However, George Russell managed to outpace Lewis Hamilton by two tenths of a second with the soft tire, securing the fourth fastest time overall.

Lance Stroll finished fifth for Aston Martin, as Fernando Alonso did not use the soft tire. Sergio Perez, in the second Red Bull, came in sixth. Perez could have been faster if not for heavy traffic in the first sector during his only flying lap on the soft tire.

Both Alpine cars performed well and made it into the top 10. Esteban Ocon was fifth among the initial drivers with the hard tire, with only the Red Bulls, Mercedes, and Zhou Guanyu’s Sauber opting not to use that tire in the early part of FP1. There was only a tenth of a second between Ocon and Pierre Gasly as they completed their laps with the soft tire at the end.

As Alpines se encontraram entre os Red Bulls de Yuki Tsunoda e Daniel Ricciardo, ambos marcando seus melhores tempos com o composto médio nos minutos finais da sessão.
