This year marks the tenth anniversary of the tragic incident that took the life of young Formula 1 driver and Ferrari Academy pilot, Bianchi, who suffered an accident during the 2014 Japanese Grand Prix while driving for the underperforming Marussia team.

Bianchi’s collision with a recovery vehicle, which was removing the crashed Sauber of Adrian Sutil, occurred during the race under heavy rain and resulted in injuries that eventually led to his premature death in July 2015, nine months after the accident.

Bianchi and Leclerc shared a close bond, with the former acting as a mentor to the Monegasque driver. In honor of his late friend, Leclerc decided to wear a specially designed helmet for this weekend’s race.

Expressing his feelings on social media, Leclerc wrote: “A unique helmet in memory of an incredibly special individual to me. It has been ten years since we lost Jules here in Japan. Countless cherished memories that will stay with me forever. I miss him and will do my best to put this helmet on top of the podium on Sunday.”

During a press interview, Leclerc spoke about his emotions, stating: “This place holds deep meaning for me as it always reminds me of Jules. His guidance played a crucial role in my journey. As early as 2010, he spoke to my manager, Nicolas Todt, to secure my support in reaching Formula 1. He was the catalyst that transformed my career. Additionally, our families have always had an incredibly close bond. Therefore, being here evokes strong emotions. I will wear his helmet this weekend and, as always, he remains in my heart. It is crucial for me to perform well in his honor,” concluded the Ferrari driver.

Leclerc’s tweet accompanying a photo of the special helmet said: “A special helmet in memory of a very special person to me. ❤️ It’s been 10 years since we lost Jules here in Japan. So many memories together that I will never forget. I miss you and will do everything to take this helmet to the top of the podium on Sunday. 🤍”
