Charles Leclerc, the Monaco driver, expressed that Ferrari’s success in the Bahrain Formula 1 Grand Prix will depend on solving the low-speed understeer problem that was prevalent during the tests.
After a tumultuous campaign last season that led to a mid-season concept change, Ferrari committed to a complete overhaul of their 2024 car, the SF-24.

“We have a stronger and more solid foundation compared to last year, when it was much more inconsistent and difficult for us to determine the direction to work,” said Leclerc. “This gives me confidence for the future, that our rate of development can be better than in the first part of last year, when our improvement was a bit stagnant as we had to understand the source of the inconsistency. So, that’s a positive aspect.”
However, despite Ferrari’s promising start to the season, Leclerc emphasized that the team still has areas to improve with their 2024 car.
When asked about the areas Ferrari needs to address, Leclerc replied: “There are many things. To go into details, I believe there is still progress to be made in low-speed corners. But it doesn’t end there. There are several areas we need to work on. And of course, it’s a relative sport. After the first qualifying, after the first race, we will evaluate our main weaknesses compared to our competitors. From that point, we will prioritize and address the biggest weaknesses.”
Expanding on his concerns regarding Ferrari’s unsatisfactory performance at low speeds, Leclerc believes that all 10 teams faced difficulties with understeer during the tests.
“At the moment, we are facing a significant amount of understeer, which makes maneuvering the car difficult,” he explained. “I noticed that this seems to be a common problem throughout the paddock when I watch onboard footage. It seems like everyone is struggling with it. However, the key question is which team will be most affected by this understeer at low speeds. We still have work to do in this area.”
Leclerc is confident that the measures implemented by Ferrari to finish the previous season on a high note have positioned them well for the upcoming campaign.
When asked about Ferrari’s goals for the 2024 season, Leclerc replied: “Our goal is to be competitive and challenge for numerous victories. A breakthrough would certainly make the season positive. We need to build upon the positive momentum we gained in the second half of last year. Although the overall season didn’t meet our initial expectations, we started performing better later on. The team, just like the rest of the paddock, felt the positive change in our performance and our clear direction. We need to approach this season with the same mentality, maintaining a clear vision and making significant advances with each new addition to the car, just like we did in the latter part of last year.”
