Lawson’s Red Bull Baptism: A Lesson in Survival, Not Supremacy – Helmut Marko advises Lawson: “Don’t think you’re going to beat Verstappen”

MELBOURNE, AUSTRALIA - MARCH 24: Peter Bayer, CEO of Visa Cash App RB, Oracle Red Bull Racing Team Consultant Dr Helmut Marko and Liam Lawson of New Zealand and Visa Cash App RB talk in the Paddock prior to the F1 Grand Prix of Australia at Albert Park Circuit on March 24, 2024 in Melbourne, Australia. Liam Lawson is walking into a high-stakes cauldron as he prepares to join Red Bull Racing alongside the indomitable Max Verstappen for the 2025 Formula 1 season. Team advisor Helmut Marko has minced no words in setting the tone, issuing a stern but pragmatic warning to the 21-year-old rookie: “Don’t come into our team thinking you’re going to beat him.”

Verstappen’s Unmatched Reign

Verstappen, now a four-time World Champion at just 27 years old, has established himself as the dominant force in Formula 1. His teammates over the years have learned the hard way that trying to outshine the Dutchman often leads to career nosedives. Marko laid out the lessons from Verstappen’s previous pairings:

  1. Daniel Ricciardo: Once seen as a true equal to Verstappen, Ricciardo left Red Bull in 2018, unable to stomach the battle. The move derailed his career trajectory, leaving him bouncing between teams.
  2. Pierre Gasly & Alex Albon: Both young talents from the Red Bull program, their tenures as Verstappen’s teammates were short-lived as they crumbled under the weight of comparisons.
  3. Sergio Pérez: The experienced Mexican driver initially thrived, securing wins and strong points hauls. However, the technical complexity of the 2024 RB20 proved insurmountable, and Pérez’s form collapsed against Verstappen’s unrelenting brilliance.

Marko’s Advice for Lawson

Marko’s expectations for Lawson are clear and tailored to avoid the mistakes of Verstappen’s predecessors:

  1. Focus on Consistency: Lawson’s benchmark will be staying within three-tenths of Verstappen in both qualifying and race pace. For Red Bull, that’s sufficient to secure valuable points for the Constructors’ Championship.
  2. Steady Development: Marko stressed the importance of Lawson’s growth, urging the rookie to focus on learning from Verstappen rather than attempting to outsmart or outpace him with unconventional approaches.
  3. Avoid Overreaching: The Austrian warned against “technological experiments, absurd setups, and strategic games” that have previously led Verstappen’s teammates astray.

The Verstappen Effect

Being Verstappen’s teammate has been likened to entering the lion’s den. His combination of raw speed, racecraft, and adaptability puts immense pressure on anyone sharing his garage. Marko’s comments highlight just how pivotal mindset and resilience are for Lawson’s success in this role.

Lawson will need to accept that his mission isn’t to dethrone Verstappen but to contribute meaningfully to Red Bull’s overall goals. This means playing the role of a dependable second driver while seizing any opportunities that come his way.

The Stakes for Lawson

After honing his craft at VCARB and impressing in a limited 11-race stint, Lawson has been given the nod over Yuki Tsunoda to take on the challenge. His promotion represents not just faith in his talent but also Red Bull’s continued commitment to its development program.

Lawson’s ability to adapt, learn, and support Verstappen without getting caught in the shadow of his illustrious teammate will define his stint at Red Bull. For Lawson, survival and measured success in the lion’s den could be the key to a long and fruitful Formula 1 career.

Final Thoughts

As Red Bull resets with Lawson, the focus is clear: support Verstappen’s supremacy while cultivating the next generation of talent. Lawson’s journey at Red Bull will be one of navigating expectations, managing pressure, and proving that he belongs among the elite in Formula 1. Whether he can thrive where so many others faltered remains the ultimate question.
