Liam Lawson SLAMS Carlos Sainz: “Why the Outrage Over the Penalty?”

In a dramatic twist following the chaos of the Dutch Grand Prix, Liam Lawson has boldly stepped forward to question Carlos Sainz’s furious reaction to the penalty he received after their notorious clash at Zandvoort. The tension exploded just after the safety car restart, leading to a collision that left both drivers nursing race-wrecking damage—a situation the stewards firmly placed at Sainz’s doorstep.

The fallout was swift: Sainz was handed a 10-second time penalty while both he and Lawson ended their race outside the points. Meanwhile, their teammates celebrated substantial finishes, with Isack Hadjar clinching third and Alex Albon finishing fifth. Sainz, visibly incensed, labeled the penalty a “complete joke,” declaring it unworthy of Formula 1’s standards. His ire didn’t stop there; he also took a swipe at Lawson’s driving style, suggesting that the rookie prefers risky maneuvers over safe racing.

“He always seems to prefer to have a bit of contact and risk a DNF or a puncture than to actually accept having two cars side by side,” Sainz remarked, expressing hope that Lawson would mature with experience.

However, Lawson wasn’t about to let Sainz’s comments slide. In a fierce rebuttal, he said, “He can make all the comments in the world he likes, I wish he’d just come and talk to me about it rather than telling everybody else.” Even days later, as the teams prepared for the Italian Grand Prix, Lawson remained perplexed by Sainz’s refusal to engage in direct conversation about the incident.

“He’s the car going for the overtake,” Lawson explained. “I ran him outside, and he didn’t get his axle where he needed to get it, and somehow I’m deemed as being aggressive. So I don’t really understand it. But it ruined my race. We were in a position to potentially have two cars in the top five.”

Lawson continued to emphasize his bewilderment over Sainz’s emotional response, noting, “If I was overtaking him, I would understand that he’s more frustrated, but he was the car overtaking and he got a penalty for it.” He expressed a desire for Sainz to communicate directly instead of airing grievances publicly.

Interestingly, Lawson himself has felt the sting of penalties this season, having faced a similar situation earlier in the year during the Miami sprint race, where he collided with Fernando Alonso while attempting an ambitious outside maneuver at Turn 11. Despite his initial disbelief over the ruling, he has since come to terms with the current racing guidelines, reflecting, “When you read the guidelines and you understand them, that’s how they’re written this year.”

Lawson noted the importance of learning from such incidents, stating, “If the guidelines say I don’t have to give them space, why would I give them space and let them pass me? That doesn’t make sense.” He defended his actions during the clash with Sainz, asserting, “If the incident was my fault, I would have got a penalty. So to me, it’s pretty clear.”

The fallout from the incident continues as Sainz, who holds a position within the Grand Prix Drivers’ Association, has reportedly engaged in extensive discussions with the FIA regarding the incident, even missing a significant portion of the post-race debrief with his Williams team.

As the dust settles, one thing remains clear: the rivalry between Lawson and Sainz is heating up, and the stakes couldn’t be higher as both drivers look to carve their names in the annals of F1 history. The tension is palpable, and fans are left wondering how this saga will unfold in the upcoming races.
