Liam Lawson has stepped into a full-time Formula 1 race seat for the final six races of the 2024 season, replacing Daniel Ricciardo at Red Bull’s sister team. This marks a significant opportunity for the 22-year-old New Zealander, who previously impressed during his five-race stint in 2023 when he substituted for an injured Ricciardo.
Lawson revealed that Red Bull team principal Christian Horner had promised him a race seat for 2024 after his strong performances last season. Despite Red Bull advisor Helmut Marko indicating Lawson’s return earlier this year, Horner had kept the exact details quiet until recently.
“The idea of me jumping in is something that Christian told me a year ago,” Lawson said. “When I stepped out of the car, he gave me his word that I’d have a race at some point next year.”
Lawson admitted that he was unsure where or when his opportunity would arise but was informed during the Azerbaijan Grand Prix that Ricciardo would not continue the season. While Lawson acknowledged the discomfort of waiting for an opportunity to open up, he expressed gratitude for the chance to prove himself at the top level of motorsport.
Lawson also praised Ricciardo for his professionalism and support during the transition, stating that the Australian driver had been helpful and gracious despite the difficult circumstances.
With Lawson now racing alongside Yuki Tsunoda for the remainder of the season, the young driver is focused on delivering strong performances to solidify his place in Red Bull’s future plans. As Formula 1’s 2024 season enters its final stages, Lawson will be aiming to make the most of his second chance on the grid.
