Jari-Matti Latvala – ” Takamoto Katsuta should avoid being similar to me”

As the boss, Takamoto Katsuta is accustomed to listening to Jari-Matti Latvala’s advice. However, Latvala, the most experienced driver in the history of the World Rally Championship, has particularly relevant guidance for Katsuta to improve his current form. The advice is simple: stay calm and adopt a different approach.

Despite being one of the fastest drivers in the championship, Latvala was known for making costly errors and never claimed the world title he seemed destined to win. Katsuta, on the other hand, has been experiencing a dip in form despite showing improved speed. While it is clear that the Japanese driver has the potential to win rallies, he lacks the temperament to do so.

Latvala, Toyota’s team principal, acknowledges Katsuta’s performance improvements this year but emphasizes the need for a different mindset when it comes to gaining time. He advises Katsuta to focus on making a difference in fast sectors rather than risky or difficult places where the opportunity for significant gains is limited. Latvala believes that better communication with Katsuta is necessary to ensure he understands where to make a difference and avoids making mistakes.

Katsuta himself recognizes the need for a change in mindset. He acknowledges that during intense moments of competition, he tends to over-push and make mistakes. He understands that approaching rallies as a long weekend rather than a sprint in every corner is crucial. Katsuta expresses the importance of a wider view in preparing and approaching rallies and stages.

To achieve the desired results, Katsuta needs to dial back his aggressiveness and “calm down” when fighting at the front. He acknowledges his speed and the satisfaction he feels on certain stages and rallies but admits that rushing and wanting to achieve good results often leads to mistakes. Katsuta believes that a calmer approach and a wider perspective in rally preparation and approach are necessary for his personal growth.

Katsuta receives strong support from Toyota chairman Akio Toyoda and the entire Gazoo Racing World Rally Team. Latvala, when asked about frustration with Katsuta’s mistakes, emphasizes the importance of controlling excitement when competing for podium finishes. He believes that guiding Katsuta to manage his emotions is the next step in his development.
