Larson pushing boundaries during IndyCar testing before Indy 500 endeavor.

Kyle Larson recently completed a crucial test session in an IndyCar, allowing him to become more acquainted with the open wheel machine before his first-ever Indianapolis 500 in May. Larson, the reigning 2021 NASCAR Cup Series champion, has been diligently preparing for ‘The Double,’ a grueling challenge that involves racing 1,100 miles in a single day at Indianapolis and later at Charlotte Motor Speedway. His Indy 500 team is a collaborative effort between Hendrick Motorsports and Arrow McLaren, utilizing the resources of both teams to ensure Larson is well-prepared for the unique test. Larson has already completed the Rookie Orientation Program at IMS in October, gaining approval to participate in future sessions with multiple drivers on the track. This week, he took to the smaller Phoenix Raceway to push the limits of his open wheel car. Larson found the experience to be slightly uncomfortable due to the smaller track size, but he appreciated the opportunity to work on corner timing and balance. He noted that the characteristics of the IndyCar felt similar to the NASCAR chassis he’s accustomed to, which could work in his favor for achieving high finishes in both races. Larson’s adaptability and experience in various forms of racing, including dirt track sprint car races, have been valuable assets in his IndyCar training. Despite limited track time, Larson felt confident in the similarities between the IndyCar and NASCAR, especially in terms of handling and feel. He believes that getting more practice with cockpit adjustments and familiarizing himself with the car’s nuances will contribute to a smoother transition when he arrives at Indianapolis in May. The 108th Indianapolis 500 and the Coca-Cola 600 are both set to take place on Sunday, May 26.
