Lando Norris unleashes champion mindset: will extra bonus elevate him over hungry rivals?

Lando Norris, the McLaren sensation and reigning F1 champion, is gearing up for the 2026 season with a fiery determination that sets him apart from his rivals. As he steps into pre-season testing adorned with the prestigious No.1 on his car, Norris recognizes that his championship title has ignited a fierce hunger among his competitors—most notably, his fellow Brit and Mercedes star, George Russell, who has been crowned the bookies' favorite for the upcoming season.

In a recent media interaction, Norris candidly acknowledged the competitive spirit that has intensified among the drivers who entered Formula 1 alongside him in 2019, including Russell and Alex Albon. He remarked on the palpable excitement surrounding Russell's newfound status, suggesting that it has transformed his rival into a “giddy” competitor. “We all came into F1 at the same time, and it has created more hunger for them, especially for George,” Norris explained. “He is a bit giddy at the moment, and that is a great thing to see.”

However, Norris believes that his championship victory provides him with an “extra bonus” that could play a crucial role in his quest for another title. He expressed hope that his status as a title winner would earn him a level of respect from his opponents, stating, “I hope there is that little bit extra level of respect that comes from winning the title because the people who have done it know what it takes.”

But has winning the championship altered Norris's mindset as he prepares for the new season? The answer, he reveals, is both enlightening and empowering. “It is quite clear I have a different mentality and approach to Max, good or bad,” Norris stated, referencing the intense rivalry with Max Verstappen. “I am always trying to improve, and I know there are areas that I am not at the level I need to be.”

As he gears up for the 2026 season, Norris insists that his desire to win remains unshakeable. “I want to go out and win, and that is my baseline feeling,” he declared. Yet, he is also grounded in the reality of his accomplishments. “If I don’t achieve it again, I will always have something that I am very proud of and I know is a huge achievement.”

This champion isn't just resting on his laurels; his ambition and motivation are as fierce as ever. “It certainly hasn’t taken away any ambition or desire to want to do it again or to come into this season and to not care about it,” he emphasized. “If anything, I enjoyed last year a lot, and of course, I want to do it again. I have come into this season with the same ambition and motivation as last year, which is to try and win it.”

As the countdown to the 2026 season intensifies, all eyes will be on Lando Norris, the champion with a fierce heart and an unyielding desire to reclaim his throne amidst a sea of hungry rivals. Will he rise above the competition once again, or will the “giddy” energy of his fellow drivers prove too much to handle? One thing is certain: the stage is set for an electrifying season of Formula 1 racing!
