In a breathtaking finish at the 2025 Australian Grand Prix, McLaren’s Lando Norris fended off a spirited attack from Red Bull’s Max Verstappen to claim his fifth career victory. The pulsating climax of the race saw Verstappen, the reigning champion, close in on Norris, raising concerns within the McLaren camp. However, according to team principal Andrea Stella, the dwindling gap between the two drivers was due to damage sustained by Norris’s MCL39, not a drop in performance.
The season-opening Australian Grand Prix was marked by a series of unpredictable events. A formation lap crash by Isack Hadjar delayed the start of the race, and several in-race clashes reshuffled the running order. However, it was McLaren who dominated at Albert Park with Norris and Oscar Piastri leading the pack.
Despite Verstappen’s initial charge, Norris and Piastri proved their mettle, negotiating the challenging weather conditions and strategizing with their engineers. A sudden downpour on Lap 44 caught the pair off-guard, causing them both to veer off the track. While Norris managed to get back on track and pit for intermediate tires, Piastri had to reverse out of the grass to rejoin the race.
An array of crashes brought out a prolonged safety car, and when the race resumed on lap 51, Norris retained his lead. However, Verstappen’s RB21 was not far behind, maintaining a gap of less than a second and threatening to seize the lead once DRS was enabled. Despite the pressure, Verstappen could not make the decisive move.
Post-race, the media questioned McLaren’s Andrea Stella about the tension within the team as Verstappen pursued Norris. Stella divulged that Norris’s MCL39 had suffered substantial damage. “In the final laps, Lando’s car suffered considerable floor damage, leading to a loss in aerodynamic performance. This limited the car’s potential speed,” Stella said. He further explained that the damage was responsible for the escalating tension in the McLaren camp.
Stella also highlighted how Oscar Piastri’s recovery of several positions demonstrated the inherent strength of the McLaren car. He conceded that in normal circumstances, Norris would not have had such a close call. The team is yet to ascertain when and how Norris sustained the damage.
Despite the damage to his car, Norris managed to stave off Verstappen, underlining his and the MCL39’s resilience. As we enter the 2025 season, Norris has emerged as a title contender, largely due to the dominant performance of the MCL39. However, Norris has often struggled in high-pressure situations, leading to blunders and loss of position.
In the 2024 season, Norris’s mental struggles led to him losing positions at the start of races and making errors under pressure. However, the Australian Grand Prix offered several stressors – the unpredictable weather, a spin into the gravel, a restart, and Verstappen’s relentless pursuit – that could have unnerved Norris. Yet, he demonstrated considerable progress in his mental fortitude, holding on to his lead and crossing the finish line first, despite the damaged floor of his car. This victory is a testament to Norris’s off-season preparation and his growing maturity as a driver.
