Lando Norris stuns Max Verstappen on thrilling opening day of F1 2026 Bahrain test

Lando Norris Triumphs Over Max Verstappen in Thrilling Bahrain Test Kickoff

In a breathtaking display of speed and precision, McLaren's Lando Norris has emerged as the fastest driver on Day 1 of the 2026 Formula 1 pre-season tests in Bahrain, clocking a stunning lap time of 1:34.668. This electrifying performance has allowed him to outpace the reigning world champion, Max Verstappen of Red Bull, by a mere 0.129 seconds, setting the stage for an exhilarating season ahead.

The opening day of testing was nothing short of spectacular, showcasing innovations and rivalries that are sure to captivate fans worldwide. As teams took to the Bahrain International Circuit, Audi unveiled its much-anticipated not-quite-zero-pod sidepods, while Alpine flaunted its cutting-edge active aerodynamics on the rear wing. The competition was fierce, with the top four drivers all within a second of each other, igniting hopes for a thrilling championship battle.

As the morning session commenced, Verstappen initially claimed the spotlight with a formidable lap time of 1:35.433, but he quickly found himself in a fierce contest with Norris, who was determined to make his mark. The excitement reached a fever pitch during the lunch break when several teams made strategic driver swaps, with Charles Leclerc stepping into Lewis Hamilton's Ferrari and Kimi Antonelli taking over George Russell's seat at Mercedes. The shifting lineup added an extra layer of intrigue to the proceedings, with Alex Albon and Pierre Gasly also making their own contributions to the day's drama.

However, the day wasn't without its hiccups. The Alpine team faced an unexpected setback when Franco Colapinto's car grappled with an undisclosed issue, limiting him to a mere 28 laps. Meanwhile, Lance Stroll’s Aston Martin experienced its own share of troubles, forcing him to park the AMR26 in the garage just three laps into the afternoon session, as the team worked to diagnose an anomalous power unit.

As the clock ticked down, Norris surged ahead, overtaking Verstappen with a blistering lap that would ultimately remain unbeaten, even as the two drivers continued to push the limits of their machines. Leclerc made a valiant effort to keep pace, momentarily climbing to fourth place before an untimely misstep at Turn 9 cost him valuable time.

With just an hour left, Verstappen attempted to regain control over the leaderboard, extending his own best time to 1:34.830, yet it was Norris who held the crown by the end of the day. The Red Bull team was forced to conclude their running prematurely due to a fluid leak, while Mercedes struggled with setup issues that restricted Antonelli to a single lap.

As the sun set over Bahrain, the day's action culminated in a flurry of late-session drama. Albon and Perez both faced lock-ups, and Gasly's misadventure at Turn 10 underscored the high stakes and tensions of the testing environment. Ultimately, Norris's commanding performance has left fans buzzing with anticipation for what lies ahead.

With the first day of testing behind us, all eyes will be on the teams as they fine-tune their strategies and machinery, setting the stage for what promises to be a thrilling season in Formula 1.
