Lando Norris regrets making a ‘silly’ decision during the duel with Verstappen in the Austrian F1 Sprint.

Lando Norris se arrepende de tomar uma decisão ‘boba’ durante duelo com Verstappen no F1 Sprint da Áustria.

Verstappen’s aggressive maneuver at Turn 4 was the turning point in the Sprint race.

Lando Norris from McLaren expressed regret for his “foolish actions” during a dispute with Max Verstappen, which ultimately cost him the chance of victory in the Formula 1 Austrian Grand Prix Sprint event.

Initially, the British driver managed to keep up with Verstappen, who had secured pole position. Norris took advantage of the slipstream and the DRS system to make a bold maneuver on the inside of Turn 3 on the fourth lap.

However, despite gaining an advantage and having the DRS to defend his position, Verstappen retaliated and dove inside at Turn 4.

Verstappen’s daring braking maneuver not only allowed him to regain the lead but also compromised Norris’ race trajectory, enabling his McLaren teammate Oscar Piastri to overtake him.

Norris regretted not covering the inside line before Turn 4, as it prevented him from overtaking Piastri in the final laps, leaving him 5.3 seconds behind Verstappen’s Red Bull.

“It was a good battle,” reflected Norris. “I knew there wouldn’t be many opportunities to make a move.

“So, I decided to make a maneuver at Turn 3, but I made a foolish mistake at Turn 4 and left the door open. There wasn’t much more I could do.

“We battled for two corners and then Oscar managed to overtake me. I gave it my all.

“Although things didn’t go as planned, the car had good pace, and I believe we had a good fight. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough today.

“It’s great to have two cars competing against Max, and that’s what we need on Sunday.”

Norris expressed his frustration at missing a potential victory in Spain last week, despite having the fastest car. He acknowledged that constantly missing opportunities is becoming tiresome.

“I mean, we’re repeating this every week now, so I’m not going to say it again, but I could have simply done better,” he said.

“I’m not going to say I should have done better, but I needed to perform at a higher level and made a silly and stupid mistake, which wasn’t very smart on my part.

“So no, I believe we could have scored a significant amount of points, but it could have been worse, and it was a satisfactory result for the team, as that’s what we wanted.

“So I’m pleased. However, I need to improve.”

Although Norris firmly believes that Red Bull still has a clear advantage over McLaren in terms of car performance during races, he emphasized that this does not justify his small mistake.

When asked what he needs to do to overcome these small margins and change the situation in his favor, Norris replied: “Not much. It’s the little details.

“But as a racing driver, I think we’re still a bit behind, but that’s not my excuse.

“Yes, for today, it was nothing more than Turn 4. If I had just defended and not left the door open, the result would have been different.

“But even so, it could have just been one corner, and Max probably would have attacked me on the next lap. So I don’t know. There’s nothing specific.

“I’m not feeling well [due to illness]. And there are still these little opportunities that I feel like I keep missing.

“And looking back, I think, how foolish was I to do some of the things I did?

“But at the same time, I am giving my best on the track. So, I don’t necessarily agree with what people think from the outside.

“I know I wasn’t good enough and didn’t reach the necessary level. I am doing my best to improve in these aspects. And that’s all I can do for now.”
