Lando Norris: “Focusing on the Points Battle Would Be Stupid” in 2024 Title Fight Against Verstappen

Lando Norris, McLaren’s rising star, has dismissed the idea of obsessing over points as he battles Max Verstappen for the 2024 Formula 1 Drivers’ Championship. Despite McLaren’s resurgence, which has catapulted the team to the top of the Constructors’ standings, Norris remains 52 points behind Verstappen with only a few rounds remaining.

Norris has been a standout performer this season, securing two wins in the last four races, solidifying his status as a genuine title contender. However, Verstappen’s consistent performances mean he can finish second in the remaining races, including the sprint events, and still clinch the championship.

Norris Rejects Points-Driven Mindset

In a recent interview with The Athletic, Norris explained that getting caught up in the points permutations would be counterproductive. “For me, the less I can think about it, the better. It’s hard when every question is basically just about that, you know?” he remarked.

“Thinking about the bigger picture constantly is pointless. If I focus on one race at a time—what I have to do tomorrow, then Saturday, then Sunday—I’m not fixated on how this weekend’s outcome influences the next. It’s just stupid to think like that, I think.”

Pressure? Not for Norris

Despite the heightened pressure that comes with McLaren’s return to the top tier of F1, Norris remains unfazed. He insists that the title battle hasn’t negatively affected his approach or decision-making on track.

“I don’t feel like I’m going out there thinking, ‘Oh God, I have to do this because I’m fighting for a championship,’” he clarified. “It’s more about putting a little more emphasis on making the right decisions, knowing that certain choices may carry more weight now.”

A Mental Game as Much as a Physical One

Now in his sixth season in F1, Norris acknowledges that his growth as a driver extends beyond just the technical side of racing. He emphasizes the importance of managing the mental aspects of the sport, which become even more critical at the sharp end of the grid.

“I’m definitely driving better now than I ever have,” he said. “But there’s a point where it’s less about driving two-hundredths faster and more about how you approach things mentally. The mental preparation is what makes the difference at this level.”

With just a few races left and a significant points gap to overcome, Norris’s approach of staying grounded and avoiding unnecessary pressure could prove to be the key in his fight against the reigning champion, Verstappen. As he focuses on taking it race by race, Norris remains determined to give his best shot at clinching his maiden F1 title.
