Lando Norris eyes Mercedes weakness: can McLaren seize victory at Chinese GP?

Lando Norris Sets Sights on Mercedes' Achilles' Heel Ahead of Chinese GP Showdown

In a stunning revelation that could shake up the status quo of Formula 1, Lando Norris has identified a golden opportunity to disrupt Mercedes’ seemingly invincible dominance as the 2026 Formula 1 Chinese Grand Prix Sprint Race approaches. The storied German team has been in formidable form, showcasing their prowess at the season-opening Australian Grand Prix, where they secured an astonishing 83rd front-row start and celebrated a glorious 1-2 finish after a gripping 58-lap race.

As the teams gear up for the high-stakes showdown at the Shanghai International Circuit, Mercedes has effortlessly carried its momentum from Melbourne, with George Russell leading the drivers' standings for the first time in his career and snatching the first Sprint Pole of 2026. His teammate, Andrea Kimi Antonelli, further cemented the team's superiority by delivering back-to-back Qualifying 1-2s for the Brackley powerhouse.

In stark contrast, McLaren has faced a turbulent start in the new era of F1 racing, struggling to reclaim the dominant form they exhibited at the tail end of the ground effects era. The team’s woes were epitomized during the Australian GP, where Oscar Piastri's unfortunate crash during the installation lap left the home crowd in despair, and Norris could only manage a fifth-place finish.

However, hope glimmers on the horizon for McLaren as the Sprint Qualifying in Shanghai yielded a more promising outcome. Norris will start the Sprint Race from an impressive third position on the grid, a clear indication that the reigning World Champion is beginning to find his rhythm with the MCL40. Reflecting on this newfound momentum, Norris expressed his satisfaction: “I’m just happy with the result. P3 is as good as we can do for the time being. I’m pretty happy to beat both Ferraris; they seemed pretty good all day. It was a good lap, it puts me in a good position.”

Norris is now eyeing the potential to exploit Mercedes' vulnerabilities. Despite possessing the fastest car on the grid, the Silver Arrows have been plagued by issues that have hindered their ability to maximize their performance. Pre-season testing exposed critical flaws in their start procedures, which resurfaced in Melbourne when both Russell and Antonelli experienced sluggish launches. Norris is poised to capitalize on this weakness if it persists in Shanghai.

“I don’t expect them to get bad starts,” Norris cautioned. “For years, they’ve been one of the best starters. It’s an opportunity, for sure; they know what they did wrong last weekend in Melbourne. They’ll probably be fine tomorrow, but you never know. It’s a good opportunity, it’s the easiest place to overtake, off the line. We’ll see what we can do.”

While Mercedes managed to navigate the chaos off the line in Melbourne, with Ferrari taking advantage of the mishaps, their ability to recover does not dissuade Norris from believing that McLaren can mount a formidable challenge. If the Woking-based team can deliver a superior race pace and capitalize on their launch from the grid, Norris’ optimism could very well be the spark that ignites an upset.

As the anticipation builds for the thrilling race weekend ahead, the stage is set for Lando Norris and McLaren to challenge the might of Mercedes. Will the young star seize this chance and lead McLaren back to the front? Only time will tell, but one thing is certain: this showdown promises to deliver high-octane drama and edge-of-your-seat excitement. Stay tuned!
