Lando Norris dominates Abu Dhabi GP practice: can Piastri recover from costly mistake?

Lando Norris Dominates Abu Dhabi GP Practice as Piastri’s Mistake Costs Him Dearly

The Abu Dhabi Grand Prix is heating up, and Lando Norris has sent a clear message to his rivals by storming through Friday’s practice sessions, finishing FP2 with a commanding lead, three-tenths faster than Max Verstappen. As the sun dipped below the horizon over the Yas Marina circuit, the atmosphere intensified, setting the stage for what promises to be an electrifying title decider.

Norris clinched the top spot after an impressive display, showcasing his skill and determination. However, it was a different story for his McLaren teammate, Oscar Piastri, who found himself struggling for pace. A costly lock-up at Turn 6 on his second flying lap saw him languish in 11th place, leaving fans wondering what might have been.

The day began with the usual lineup of drivers returning to the track for FP2, following a busy FP1 where nine young drivers filled their teams’ mandatory outings. Piastri’s car had undergone setup changes after being driven by Pato O’Ward earlier, while Verstappen’s RB21 also saw some adjustments during the break.

Tension was palpable as championship contenders Norris and Verstappen encountered a close call during the session. Norris, frustrated with the situation, exclaimed, “What’s this guy doing? We almost crashed,” as the stewards took note of the incident but ultimately decided on no further action.

As conditions cooled and the wind picked up, it was George Russell who began to find his rhythm in his Mercedes, while Norris continued to rise through the ranks, eventually improving to third, just ahead of Verstappen by a razor-thin margin of 0.016 seconds. The first frontrunner to switch to soft Pirelli tyres, Verstappen briefly took the lead with a time of 1:23.446, but Norris had other plans.

Midway through the session, Norris unleashed a blistering lap, clocking in at 1:23.083, solidifying his position at the top with a stunning gap of 0.363 seconds over Verstappen. Meanwhile, Piastri’s struggles continued as he slipped to 10th, unable to find the pace needed to keep up with the frontrunners.

In an unexpected turn, Alex Albon reported issues with his engine, only to be informed by Williams that adjustments had been made on their end, further complicating the team’s strategy. As the session drew to a close, the excitement was palpable, with Bearman relishing his final grand prix in the Haas VF-25, declaring, “The car is insane. I don’t know how it is so good.”

The session concluded with Norris firmly in control, leaving Verstappen and Russell in his wake. Piastri, meanwhile, faced a frustrating day, ending FP2 in a disappointing 11th place. As the teams prepare for qualifying, all eyes will be on Norris to see if he can maintain this momentum and deliver a spectacular performance in the race. The stage is set, and the question remains: can Lando Norris secure his place in the spotlight, or will the pressure of the title decider prove too much?
